Is Altera worth more than $17 billion? That's what Intel will soon find out as seeks billions for minority stake in the subsidiary. Intel is struggling to stay relevant in the AI race. AI technology may be hungry for energy and power, but it's also hungry for cash. While Big Tech and Nvidia are swimming and burning through cash, Intel is in the position of desperately needing an influx of it. Altera seems to be the bargaining chip. The subsidiary develops field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA), which are essentially programmable chips used in a variety of applications such as data centers, automotive technology, telecommunications, and even military equipment. All of this comes at a significant time of uncertainty for Intel who is also looking at putting itself on the selling block as well. And the company recently announced revamped strategy that would turn its foundry business, which manufactures chips for other companies, into an independent subsidiary. With Nvidia in the pole position for GPUs and the U.S. CHIPS Act doling out billions to chip manufacturers including Intel, the chip industry is tipping over with players. For Intel, it's the enviable position of trying to right its ship and staying in the AI, while its burning through cash. Intel Corporation's latest attempt to convince investors that its turnaround plan is working backfired, causing a $27 billion drop in its market value. This widened the gap between Intel and its competitors as it struggles to benefit from the growing demand for artificial intelligence technology. The company's stock has fallen by 15% since April 2, when it disclosed disappointing prospects for its foundry division. This brings its year-to-date decline to 25%, a significant contrast to its strong performance in 2023.
