Looking for a sales position is a job... So treat it like one. When looking for a job, I was clear that I needed a daily routine AND a tracking system to hold me accountable. When you don't have a job and you're looking for one, it's very easy to entertain yourself with a zillion things that don't matter. Such as walking your dog, fixing the living room door, or doing laundry... If you're looking for a sales job and spending the majority of your day on low-importance tasks... STOP. You need to apply to lots of open positions and talk to hiring managers, that's it. I recommend that you pick a number of job openings you want to apply for each day and do that first thing. I chose 5 applications a day. And to hold myself accountable and to score each offer I applied to, I created a scorecard. (You can grab a copy of mine down below if you like.) I chose 8 criteria for each job opening and assigned a score to each. That way, if a company came back to me with an offer, and in the case that I had different offers to choose from, I would have a better clue about which one I preferred the most. On the other hand, the scorecard helped me stay accountable. I didn't stop applying each day until 5 more rows of the scorecard were filled in. That is how I created a basic system that I needed to complete each day. And six weeks later, I landed my sales job. In my next post, I will talk about a crucial part of this whole process. Good opportunity

Most people think that hiring a salesperson will give them back time and freedom. It can...but it has to be done the right way. If it isn't, it will have the opposite effect. Why? Because people rarely think about the amount of time and work it takes to process those deals. Let's say you are doing 20 deals and barely managing them, so you hire someone to help with the sales. Now, you are doing 15, they are doing 15, and everything seems to be running amazingly until the deals need to be processed. Except now, the paperwork has doubled, and the more success you get, the harder it becomes to keep up. This is why it's almost always best to begin with hiring an admin person. They can get work off your plate immediately, and not only that but having a well-oiled business makes for a more appealing offer when you eventually start looking for a salesperson. Now that you aren't needed to process the payments, your focus can shift to closing more deals or growing your sales team. But this time, you get to be busy growing your business.

Sharing a very interesting (and high potential compensation) AE role I was just made aware of. It's the role where I learned most of what I know about sales. Two good friends of mine are hiring (Rachel Putman and Jack Riker). Multiple open spots. Company: Wunderkind Seniority: medium / high (you have to be very strong to get on the team there these days) Comp potential: you can earn more here than most roles in SaaS, if you’re good What they sell: email marketing software to big ecommerce brands (you’ll sell to CMOs and their teams) The product is expensive because it drives big revenue impact for their customers. (it's VERY fun to sell a product that drives measurable revenue) What I'd do to get an interview: figure out how to get a meeting w Rachel, the hiring manager. Or you could apply on the website, but we all know how that works...

"I'm introvert, don't think I'm suitable for a sales role..." I get this so often, I felt I needed to address this. You know it's interesting that people assume there's only one way to run a financial advisory business. Which is by the law of large numbers. Who is to say we can't run a FA practice by working with fewer clients and manage a bigger portfolio per client? Who also said we have to be constantly 'hunting' for clients? Why can't we build a model whereby clients want our services and reach out to us instead? If we are good, clients can also refer clients.
