In December, the 𝑸𝒖𝒐 𝑽𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒔, 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕? focus on athletes' human rights, authored by Dr Daniela Heerdt. Dr Daniela Heerdt is a researcher at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague and a consultant on sport and human rights, with more than 8 years of experience working in the field. With a background in public international law and human rights law, she conducted PhD research on the topic of human rights abuses in the context of mega-sporting events and how to establish legal responsibility in these cases and has expanded her research and expertise to human rights issues in day-to-day sports since then. Through her consultancy with the Centre for Sport and Human Rights, she has worked together with a number of sport organisations on questions around human rights due diligence and designs and organizes online and offline educational activities on sport and human rights, and continues to build a global academic network on the topic. In this article, we learn about the developments we have seen in the past years regarding sport organisations' understanding of the human rights of athletes and the path ahead to tackle this ever-more important topic. The International Olympic Committee – IOC took a significant step forward by adopting a strategic human rights framework in 2022. I don't often disagree with you Russell...but I will take the other side of this one. My instinct is not to trust/align/make ourselves accountable to another international assoc of big thinkers. Surely their are people of sufficient character and quality within Canada to help ground and shape the COC as we move into the future. As an example, I am not convinced (from what I have read) that the CSHR goes far enough (for my liking) in the protection for biological females. I would much rather that Canadians have this debate and decide for ourselves the competitive environments we believe to be fair...even if the consensus turns out to be different from my view. I am glad we are having this difficult conversation and we certainly need to look to others for input as we forge our views...but I think we should maintain our full Canadian autonomy and trust our instincts and not be in a position to be swayed by another non-Canadian international body of big thinkers. It strikes me as an insurance policy to shield us from some of the mistakes of the recent past and I think we can do better. p.s. if you get the impression I have an inherent bias against / distrust of international associations of big thinkers you would be correct. 😉

🚨 Sport unites people and can help overcome differences. It is also a lucrative business that too often comes at the expense of human rights. As the home country of the world’s biggest sports bodies, #Switzerland must ensure that sports bodies respect human rights in all their activities. ☝️ Some of the largest sports bodies such as #FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognize that they have a responsibility to prevent, mitigate and remedy human rights abuses, as outlined in the #UNGuidingPrinciples on Business and Human Rights. ❌ However, Switzerland, which benefits economically from the presence of over 50 international sports federations, does not make such human rights due diligence mandatory – the only initiatives that exist are based on voluntary action. 📢 This needs to change. We are proud of our contribution to the United Nations Secretary-General’s 2024 report “United by our common goals: ensuring the impact of sport on sustainable development and peace”, which includes a full reproduction of CSHR’s ecosystem with full translation into all six official UN languages. The Centre’s overview of the global sport ecosystem is used and represented in the report to deepen understanding of the multiple stakeholders engaged in sport and to highlight potential entry points and opportunities for strengthening implementation of the UN Action Plan amidst current global challenges.
