President AHSCA (Vic) ; Expert Witness ; Forensic Engineer in Construction Litigation:

It's unacceptable that Standards committees continue to operate without detailed and active industry consultation, scrutiny and accountability. This is another example of something being fixed that wasn't broken and leading to wide spread industry cost and confusion. What was the problem? Why is the recommended fix better? What is the cost to the community? Does it have industry wide support? What are the long term ramifications? Who or what organisation was the proponent? What evidence is relied upon to establish the need for change? There needs to be urgent reform in the Standards development space with the Australian Building Codes Board ensuring the Impact assessments are diligently prepared and made publicly available for technical debate and scrutiny, as would be appropriate for any other regulatory proposal for change. #timeforchange #abcb #ahsca #secretcommiteebusiness #governance National Fire Industry Association of Australia

INDUSTRY ALERT: AS2419.1:2021 has abandoned the 100 year plus convention for fire hydrant sluice valves installed in ground to be a left handed spindle. This will lead to wide spread industry confusion for generations to come and the delay and non-compliance of a number of large scale projects under construction. Please don't get caught and make the necessary arrangements prior to final commissioning to avoid delays and claims for liquidated damages.

This is typical of what was done with Building Regulations in Victoria when Municipal Building Surveyors, after 50 years of experience in all matters of building construction were pushed to one side and ignored in the new revolutionary style of privatisation. Resist these changes proposed until total scrutiny is allowed and the practical reasons are considered as to why these changes are necessary keeping safety as the prime requirement and not administration.

As Mark has said, where is the evidence? With LH valves in the ground, a fire service cannot be accidentally turned off. Well meaning service people could easily accidentally isolate a fire main. What Change Management practices were followed here?
