🌍 The 2024 edition of our Summer School on Poverty and Inequality concludes successfully! This intensive course brought together 24 participants from 17 countries from various academic and professional backgrounds. Addressing critical global challenges, the Summer School was designed to align with the first Sustainable Development Goal: to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere.” It also aimed to contribute to zero hunger, better health, better education, and reduced inequalities. Participants explored essential topics in poverty and inequality research, including measurement, analysis, conceptual integration, data limitations, and the policy context of poverty measures. Practical lab sessions emphasized economic intuition and required basic Stata skills. Coordinated by Nicolai Suppa from the Universitat de Barcelona, participants leave with deeper understanding and new insights into poverty and inequality. These skills will empower them to address these challenges in their fields and regions. #SummerSchool #Economics #Poverty #Inequality

How can policy reduce intergenerational inequality? It would help to dislodge teachers' widespread practice of tracking or selecting pupils into different groupings, classes or schools by how they are perceived to perform academically. Evidence suggests it's hugely damaging for pupils from under-resourced backgrounds. A privilege to contribute to the Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality. https://lnkd.in/eNnsY5eb

What you see has the power to shape you, influencing both your personal development and the environment you inhabit, either positively or negatively. Thus, this change also affects those around you, and it can be easily traced through the Index of Human Capital by The World Bank. An infographic from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University - Place Matters: What Surrounds Us Shapes Us - highlights the importance of a child's living environment: https://lnkd.in/em9pjmKf It is not surprising, at least for literacy promoters, that place matters. While eradicating #poverty or addressing polluted air and #climatechange may not be easy tasks, nor is providing proper education or healthcare for children, there is at least one readily implementable solution for changing the environment: READING for just 15 minutes a day! According to scientific research, reading for just 15 minutes every day can aid in a child's development, improving socio-emotional skills, vocabulary, and knowledge. It has also been proven that poverty can impair brain development in children, but reading has the ability to mitigate these negative effects and change the places we live for the better. #ReadingIsTheKey #EuropeReads #SDGthroughreading #education #learning #lifelonglearning #libraries #bookgifting #EURead #readaloud #ReadingTogether #bookpacks

In a country like ours, there is no reason why we should be plagued with poverty and illiteracy. We see the effects everyday- high crime rate, low competent labor force, high levels of poverty, hindered social and political participation, amongst other issues💔 As the world is moving at an exponential pace, some nations are left behind struggling with issues that should be have been resolved decades ago.📊 This has left them with no time and focus to delve deeply into technological innovation and advancement as well as other new areas that the rest of the world is exploring. 🔬 If the educational system in our country is not given the needed attention, as sad as it sounds, we still have a long way to go. Education is the gateway to a brighter future, but for many, barriers like poverty and discrimination block the path. Across the globe, unequal access to schooling keeps countless students from reaching their full potential. Everyone deserves a chance to learn, regardless of where they live or their background. By investing in inclusive policies and resources, we can level the play field and empower individuals interested in getting an education. Education isn't just about books—it's about breaking cycles of poverty and injustice. #Education #academia #futureprofessor #universityprofessor #teaching
