Are you a therapist working in sport? Do you see concussions in your athletes? Do you just follow return to play guidelines and hope time solves the problem? Do you do this with other sports injuries? Or do you have a rehab plan for those ? BTW return to play protocols are not rehab plans, they are to make sure that returning to activity does not increase symptoms while waiting for time to fix the problem. What got me into this… Growing up, I was an athlete. Baseball was my biggest passion. In high school I was a pitcher that was looking to play in college. My junior year I suffered a shoulder injury that ended my pitching career. Knowing what I know now, there were several factors that led to the injury: incorrect training with a trainer that didn’t understand how to train an overhead athlete, poor warm up routines, and no access to good preventative testing to know that I was at risk entering the season where I got injured. Through my own rehab I got to see the field of sports medicine and wanted to help other athletes avoid the same fate as me. This is where my passion for objective testing comes in. As physical therapists and athletic trainers we all know that these cases are sitting out there, but how do we identify them so we can intervene before the injury actually happens? The more I test teams and individual athletes, the more I’m amazed at how many of these athletes are at significant risk of injury. 🔄 Mitchell and Gimpel (2024) offer a framework to guide injured players back to performance with clear progressions and objective criteria at each rehabilitation phase. 🏃♂️⚽ Abstract: Soccer Injury Impact on Teams 1️⃣ 12%-14% of squads may be unavailable due to injury. 2️⃣ Pressure on coaches and medical staff to expedite Return to Play (RTP). 3️⃣ Inconsistency in objective criteria and thresholds can lead to inadequate rehabilitation and premature RTP. 4️⃣ Poor staff communication can also contribute. 🎯After initial diagnosis and planning, players complete acute management to reduce pain and swelling while maintaining conditioning. ➡️Players then restore normal movement patterns and foundational strength in the gym. ➡️Multiple gym conditioning pathways aim to rebuild strength, power, capacity, and injury-specific qualities. ➡️Objective profiling on criteria like hop tests determines readiness to return to running outside on the grass. ➡️On the grass, players reload technically and aerobically at low intensities initially. Higher-speed running and agility drills are then introduced to meet positional requirements. ➡️Maximal speed and football-specific drills follow, along with ongoing strengthening for injury-specific deficits. ➡️Graded exposure to team training manages cognitive overload and injury risk. Competitive match exposure increases progressively based on confidence and output monitoring. ✅Overall, the end goal is returning to unrestricted performance at pre-injury level or better. In this clip, (6:35) the students assist my transfer to a deflated exercise ball. To transfer I grip one student's shoulders and push my feet into the floor as much as I can. The student shifts my weight to the right to land on the ball. https://lnkd.in/ggc54S8B Before we begin the cross body tennis ball touches the students ensure my feet are planted on the ground and the student behind me pulls me back to increase my stability. I perform cross body reaches to the student's hand using a tennis ball then with light free weights. During the exercise, we discuss if I have a tendency to drop items and how I go about recovering items from the floor with a "grabber" device from Walmart. Key Takeaways: 1. Before transferring a patient to an exercise ball therapists should explain their desired approach and the patient's role in the process. 2. Encourage as much physical patient participation as possible to make the transfer more of a "shift" or "pivot" instead of a lift. 3. Many athletes view warming up as going through the motions. Stretching… mobility… get the heart rate up… All for the purpose of injury prevention and fitness. However, it’s so much more than that… Watch Jannik here in his warm-up before the Australian Open final… After his mobility and other components, he prepares one more thing. His mind. Not in terms of nerves or stress but in terms of processing the ball. Ball - Eye. A huge fundemental cognitive process we need for racket sports. Without this we would be useless on the court. Yet many of us visually process our first ball of the day once the match is underway on court and the match warm-up has started. This doesn’t allow for manipulated practice or to slow things down. The ball is live, and the clock is ticking. Adding this style of preparation to a warm-up allows players to go out onto the court feeling sharper and faster while focusing their on-court warm-up on what matters most. #concentration #cognition #warmup

Dear Coach, When it comes to technique and injuries, I notice that my friends are getting injured easily. I understand that it is important that we learn the basics of the sport, but when it comes to preventing injuries that should be way more important than anything else. There are multiple athletes on our team who are currently unable to row or are in and out of practice because they are injured. I think that it is most important to prevent injuries so that me and my teammates don't have to back up on them and stand in when there aren't enough athletes to participate. Therefore my solution to this problem is to make us stronger before we even touch an oar and work on our technique before we work on becoming fast rowers. M.C. Age 14 When a parent sent this in to Brand X®, we were in awe over the initiative of this 14 year old youngster to communicate so clearly -and with the interest of the team as a whole in mind.
