A key aspect to the outdoor space that is different than the indoors is that you don't have walls, ceilings, partitions or other elements that help frame and create the bounds of the space. You need seatwalls, pergolas, trees, fencing, screens, etc. to help define the outdoor space. Like in the image below the pergola ovehead creates a ceiling and the seatwalls and plantings create perceived walls that make a clear outdoor room. Image this space with out those elements, just a table and barbecue island on a concrete slab where your completely exposed to the elements and views from all sides.
