We've been celebrating South Asian Heritage Month and using it as an opportunity for our people to get to know each other even more. Colleagues have been sharing photos of their travels, giving away their best recipes, and providing interesting facts about the different countries in South Asia. Thank you to Vijay, Max, Mel, and Swapna for giving us insight into their heritage and culture. South Asian Heritage Month seeks to commemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities. It seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia.

Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month: Free to Be Me As we commemorate South Asian Heritage Month, we reflect on our vibrant heritage and the journey to express our true selves. This year's theme, "Free to Be Me," highlights both our diverse identities and the ongoing challenges in expressing them authentically. Our South Asian heritage is a rich tapestry of colourful festivals, aromatic cuisines, and profound traditions. Celebrating this heritage is about honouring our past, embracing our present, and inspiring future generations. However, the journey to being "Free to Be Me" is often fraught with obstacles, from cultural misunderstandings to systemic racism. Here’s how society can support South Asians: • Educate and raise awareness about South Asian histories and cultures. • Amplify South Asian voices in media, politics, and other public spheres. • Challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity. • Support South Asian businesses and creatives. • Create safe spaces for South Asians to express their identities. • Practice allyship by participating in cultural events and advocating for equitable policies. At PEP, our new strategy and website launch in the coming months proudly align with "Free to Be Me." We focus on creating better representation and equitable leadership opportunities through lived experiences. Stay tuned for our brave, authentic voice! #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #FreeToBeMe #RepresentationMatters #PEPEnterpriseCIC

🚨 On 18th July, we begin to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month. 🚨 I’m a mum to children of British and Indian heritage, and I like to explore everything that the month has to offer- learning about traditions and exploring moments in history that have impacted the communities in South Asia and their diaspora. This month’s theme is 'free to be me' and a great opportunity to share some recommended resources. Now, I’m a big reader so here’s some reads… Factual reads: 📙 Empireland- How Imperialism Has Shaped Modern Britain by Sathnam Sanghera (taking a closer look at the British Empire and how it has shaped Britain today). 📙 Partition Voices by Kavita Puri (personal experiences shared about family separation, extraordinary journeys and daring rescue missions during the partition of India). 📙 It’s Not About the Burqa, edited by Mariam Khan (seventeen women speak frankly about the hijab, faith, love, feminism and much more, demonstrating that it’s not all about the burqa, despite what the British media say). Fictional reads can also share moments in history. Here are some that I recommend: 📘 Partitions by Amit Majmudar (the partition of India). 📘 The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (set in Afghanistan in the early 70's, about a young boy and his friend growing up in Kabul). But if you’re not into reading, or don’t have the time to, here are some alternative resources you may like: 🎧 Podcast- Expulsion@50. A podcast sharing the story of the expulsion of Asians by President Idi Amin from Uganda, back in 1972. 🎧 Partition Voices- BBC Sounds- The untold stories of British Asians and Colonial British who witnessed India's partition. Let me know of any other recommends you have. To find out more about South Asian Heritage Month, and how to get involved, go to https://lnkd.in/eDiU9DzJ

World Day for Cultural Diversity Every year on 21 May, #UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and this let me to reflect about our vibrant cultures, rich languages, and cherished traditions are the very soul of humanity's shared wisdom, a testament to our longing for peace and harmony. In the intricate tapestry of today's world, it's essential to recognize that our differences are not obstacles but pathways that unite us, paving the way for a world without wars. Every culture brings its own precious wisdom and innovative solutions to the table, playing a vital role in fostering sustainable development, global peace, and harmony.

It's May, and oSTEM is celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month! This month is dedicated to honoring the experiences, cultures, influences, and humanities of Pacific Islanders and Asians, including South Asians (Desi), along with many other Asians who may not typically be acknowledged under the umbrella term "Asians." We also acknowledge the oversimplified nature of grouping such diverse cultures together and believe that each culture deserves individual appreciation and celebration.
