Experiencing the Magic of Samichlaus in Switzerland 🎅 🪄 Having recently moved to a small village in Switzerland, I had the unique opportunity to witness a beautiful local tradition—the Samichlaus Parade. Unlike the city parades I have seen before, this one was intimate, cultural, and filled with the sound of Swiss cowbells echoing through the streets. 🔔 This year, the parade passed directly in front of my house, and I felt truly integrated into the community when the cowbell players performed especially for my 2-year-old son. Watching his joy and curiosity as he experienced a new culture was a moment I will cherish forever. 🎊 This experience reminded me of the importance of connecting with local traditions and cultures. Just as this event brought us closer to the community, understanding and respecting local customs is equally crucial in professional life. #DEI programs are in the crosshairs of the new administration, specifically in the form of this week's executive order and the fact all federal DEI employees in the U.S. have been placed on leave. But the politicization of — and opposition to — diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives is most certainly not new. In some ways, the events industry has been trying to work around these political constraints for some time, attempting to ensure that events and our industry foster inclusivity and belonging even as some organizations abandon the DEI nomenclature related to those efforts. I wrote the following article last February, when Destinations International repositioned their DEI efforts as "social inclusion." I think the points brought up in the story are at least as relevant to the conversation today, and probably more so. I'm already working with some sources on new content to address this, but meanwhile I'm wondering: Have organizations in the meetings industry that previously tweaked their DEI-related vocabulary found success in avoiding some of the blowback they might have otherwise received from some constituents? Can events professionals effectively reframe the conversation around inclusive events and belonging while avoiding politicized triggers and ensuring we properly represent and welcome our participants? It’s been a 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨,  but the Eras Tour starts the first of three nights this evening in Dublin where Taylor Swift is due to perform for over three hours. As her global tour makes headlines across the world for its record breaking accolades, there has also been much talk around the power of “Swiftonomics”; the level of consumer spending generated on hospitality, travel, Food & Beverage, fashion and even friendship bracelets.  Evident of the 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩 Swift fans can bring to certain products and services, a spike in Google searches for ‘friendship bracelets’, as fans get ready to show up in true Swiftie 𝘚𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦. Ireland is not alone in this phenomenon, with a clear spike in searches in other tour locations ahead of her arrival. It is hard to miss when Taylor arrived to Australia in February in the chart below… There was plenty of debate this week around a spending boost in the UK and how much value does an event such as this actually create? Is it a fleeting moment or a does it bring with it a longer economic impact? Although the 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘸 economic bounce host locations will experience once Taylor has got in her 𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘳 and moved on to the next location is limited, it is important to not lose sight of the cumulative effect that numerous headline events throughout the summer/year have on many parts of our economy.
