You never know what you’ll find when diving on our restored shellfish reefs in Port Phillip Bay. Recently, our divers were out doing some monitoring at Dromana and came across these wonderful critters calling the reefs home (seahorse, cuttlefish and nudibranch (sea slug)). These restored shellfish reefs are home to not only oysters, but an abundance of fish life and invertebrates. National Hummingbird Day is the first Saturday in September. These fragile, precious little birds are small yet mighty when it comes to be being one of nature's most important pollinators. Hummingbirds can beat 70 times per second and 200 times when diving! They are the only birds that can fly backwards. When you have a bird feeder for hummingbirds be sure to clean and refill it one a week and more often during hot humid seasons to avoid bacterial growth in the feeder. The safer option is to make sugar water for hummingbirds instead of a mixture of sugar and water. The amount of sugar to water is important to get the ratio that mimics the amount of sugar found in the flower nectar. Small batch: 1/4 cup white granulated sugar (60 ml) - 1 cup water (236 ml) Medium batch: 1/2 cup white granulated sugar (118 ml) - 2 cups water (472 ml) Directions: Add the sugar to the water in a small pot. Boil the sugar until it dissolves. But here's there real story.... During my shark dive in the South Pacific a couple of years ago, we chummed the water with blood and sent a frozen bail ball down the line. Hundreds of sharks appeared, yet not one of them showed any aggression towards us. They were not looking to eat me or anyone else. I despise Shark Week's misrepresentation and falsehoods about sharks aggressive nature. This misinformation leads to unnecessary fear and encourages trophy hunting, resulting in these magnificent creatures being needlessly killed. Imagine seeing sharks swimming majestically underwater instead lying dead on a dock. This experience can change your perspective forever. The pufferfish is nothing but inventive when it comes to creative ways to avoid becoming somebody else’s dinner. Filling their stomachs with huge amounts of water (and sometimes air), the pufferfish can blow themselves up to several times their regular size, intimidating their predators and making them a difficult snack to swallow. If blowing up to the shape of a ball doesn’t scare away any would-be predators, then some pufferfish have spines on their skin to deter being eaten. Other clever adaptions a pufferfish uses to keep itself safe include poisoning its enemies by secreting lethal toxins or even attacking other threatening animals with its beak-like teeth.
