SA's Lesson #3 in building startups (learned the hard way): Marketing is a strategic weapon if you know how to use it right and it needs to be thought through BEFORE you invest heavily in sales. A few 30,000 foot lessons: 1. Marketing =! Advertising or just demand generation. It is a number of interconnected capabilities that need to be tightly integrated across the company including: product marketing as the "bridge" between product and sales, demand generation, content & PR, some elements of branding, your website, and a lot more. 2. Product and Sales need to understand their place on the soccer field relative to marketing and vice versa (e.g. for new launches, events, content development, product positioning). What to expect, when to engage, what to provide and when to trust each other to "run with and without the ball". As a founder / leader making the 3 "molecules" work like a clock takes work, but done right, it can pay huge dividends 3. Don't waste PR / any opportunity to present / speak publicly by making it about you or your company. Make it "contentful". Celebrate customers and their success and not lukewarm ho-hum news. For example, "we just signed up a customer" smells desperate and makes people's eyes roll. The more you can provide content-rich examples of delivering true value, the more you can make small investments in PR go far. 4. Always take the high road and don't market vaporware. Customer communities are tight knit, so stretching the truth e.g. "we do bidirectional write and read from EHR x", unsubstantiated claims of ROI, bad mouthing competitors - all of these will come back and bite you. Once you lose trust, it's very hard to regain it - it also bleeds into company culture where "it's ok to bend the truth" 5. Market the pain not the drug. People buy your understanding of their pain / problems. If you can prove you understand them very, very deeply, the solution is almost an easy next step. So market the pain and not the product - most customers couldn't care less exactly what your product is or does or why you are so proud of it. They just want you to solve the problem for them. 6. Don't market too soon, and measure twice, cut once. Until you have 3 - 4 proof points of solid success, you are typically wasting your time. While it is true that it takes repetition and multiple touch points, that is only one half of the story. Unless you can express the precise right articulation of the pain and the solution to the precise audience (and often multiple audiences), you are wasting your time and theirs. That takes having gone through multiple successful implementations and having real proof of ROI. 7. Invest in the marketing org, systems, tools and process to scale BEFORE building a big sales team.
