Decarbonization of the construction industry by concrete recycling to promote sustainability is the need of an hour. It also eliminates/reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

This is proof that #circulareconomy is a viable way of working for the construction industry, not only as a pathway to decarbonization but more importantly as a way to keep virgin resources on the ground without starving the world of the building materials it needs to grow. While initiatives around re-purposing wastes like municipal solid waste (MSW) to fuels and industrial wastes and by-products like flyash and slag as mineral components are already widely adopted, there are still many growth opportunities in circularity that need to be recognized and embraced in construction. One area is construction demolition materials (CDM). This is founded on the belief that concrete wastes from demolishing old buildings and structures can be recycled, repurposed, reused. They do not need to be wasted by being thrown away as is the current practice. They can instead be used to make substitute materials that can go on to replace virgin resources creating a circular and more purposeful life cycle for a product. This project by Holcim is a source of inspiration; if it can be done in France, it can be done in the Philippines too!
