Out now from Markosia on DriveThruComics! In The Valley Of Death “A beautifully brutal look at trench warfare in World War I.” – Rich Woodall (Writer/ Artist) “Geoff has created something more realistic and gripping than 90 percent of what TV and film are putting out!” – Shuli Egar (Comedian, the Shuli Network on YouTube) 1916 had been a bad year for both sides in the First World War. On Saturday, July 1st it became a sunlit picture of Hell as the Battle of the Somme begins. The first day of the conflict will become one of the bloodiest in the history of warfare and will contribute to the structure of a war that will define the shape of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exciting news: Next month, Emerging Civil War and Savas Beatie are releasing a book highlighting the Civil War's Western Theater, including a couple of pieces that I wrote. Some of the most interesting and impactful parts of the Civil War happened in the Western Theater, and they've received so much less attention as a result of being outside of the limelight in the East. This book does a really nice job of highlighting some of those stories. You can learn more at: https://lnkd.in/gjihAsQR

It's Friday, everyone. This month marks the 20th anniversary of Operation Phantom Fury, also known as The Second Battle of Fallujah, the biggest, bloodiest, and costliest of the U.S.-led war and occupation of Iraq [2003-2011]. Working for NBC News as a correspondent/shooter, I embedded with 3.1 Marines, videotaped, and reported some of the battle's most dramatic and controversial footage. Even all of these years later, it's difficult to watch. Still, it is necessary to ensure the event isn't reduced to the nostalgia of military tactics and strategy but studied for the more profound lessons revealed by the costs of fighting an unprovoked, unnecessary war with unclear objectives and clearly outside the scope of national interests. In this and upcoming videos, I will examine the physical, mental, and moral injuries suffered by combatants and civilians during this conflict. Much of what I witnessed and recorded has never been seen. [But please be WARNED the video is graphic in the depiction of fighting and casualties of war.] Watch this and find other captivating true stories at Kevin Sites Writes Substack. If you see history for its times of peace...can we bring more peace? If we focus on the times of war...what do we get? More books and movies on war. The majority of our budgets are focused on war. Do we have a Department of Peace yet?

Civil War, Alex Garland’s latest film, goes beyond the chaos of a divided America to confront deeper questions about empathy, detachment, and self-interest. Through the journey of Lee Smith, an experienced war journalist portrayed by Kirsten Dunst, and her young ambitious colleague Jessie, played by Cailee Spaeny, Garland reveals how the demands of survival and ambition can strip people of their humanity. As they navigate a war-torn landscape, their choices expose the unsettling reality of a society where self-interest often eclipses compassion. In this article, I will explore the film’s powerful themes and try to connect them to my own experiences as a surgeon, where balancing detachment and empathy is crucial yet challenging. How does one stay human in the face of suffering—whether on a battlefield, behind a camera lens, or in an operating room? Read my article at the link below in Medium.
