When it comes to comic books AI is a huge no. Creative processes such as art, writing or even editing cannot be successfully interpreted by AI technology. Even more important, at every level art is subjective, it is a creative unique display of talent, interpretation, skill and knowledge that is special and worthy of praise. That’s why we like to read and create comics. We like the story, style, narrative, coloring, inking, drawing or just the take on the characters. We appreciate the joint effort of a creative team. Dark Horse Comics just said no to every kind of #AI in its business. Others should follow to protect their businesses and artists.

While the “adapt or die” argument may seem reasonable on the surface. Arguments are not evidence. The evidence in the actual world us suggests that this argument is not sound. All entertainment companies require artists to create their products for them. If all the best artists blacklist them, then how are they supposed make money? At this point most content people see that’s created by genAI is just pure spam or scams. To the point that it’s now been dubbed “Boomer art” by the younger generation because they feel like only old people fall for it. They have irrevocably linked genAI to spam and scams. The smart decision would be to keep the business model that already works. Rather than up-end the relationship they have with their customers and their collaborators. Why risk that for larger margins and quicker turn arounds from the least skillled collaborators? That has never motivated sales ever. There seems to be a false equivalency here to other technology such as digital painting or CGI. It’s not that. This time it’s adopt and die. This is not “inevitable” this is currently being rejected. It doesn’t make sense to just passively allow garbage nobody wants to be shoved down everyone’s throat.
