Among ASEAN’s leading economies, Singapore stands out for its strong intellectual property (IP) protections, scoring highly for its copyrights, trademarks, and patents. This is bolstered by a robust enforcement system, specialized IP courts, and a stringent legal framework. However, it scores moderately for performance in trade secrets. Meanwhile, its ASEAN neighbours like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand face IP challenges, with lower scores for trade secrets and patents due to developing legal frameworks and inconsistent enforcement. In 2022, foreign applicants made up about 50% of trademark filings across Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, showing the region’s growing appeal to international businesses. ASEAN countries increasingly embracing global IP frameworks such as the Madrid System and Patent Cooperation Treaty, making it easier for businesses to secure regional trademark and patent protections. Intellectual property (IP) represents a valuable yet underutilised asset for SMEs and start-ups, I wrote to the newspaper South China Morning Post SCMP. SMEs and start-ups can leverage Hong Kong’s robust legal system, strong IP protection and wealth of IP expertise. New areas like #IP-backed #financing, and other topics like the intersection of IP and technology, IP #commercialisation for creative and cultural industries, as well as opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and ASEAN for IP will be discussed at our #flagshipevent Business of Intellectual Property Asia Forum (#BIPAsia), on 5-6 December 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. BIP Asia brings together global IP professionals and business leaders to discuss the latest trends in the dynamic IP market, and explore #businessopportunities across Asia and beyond. Last year, BIP Asia attracted over 2,500 participants from 35 countries and regions. I look forward to seeing you there!

However, obtaining a trademark registration in Malaysia is advisable because a trademark that is not registered may be difficult to enforce. It is worth noting that the registration certificate issued by MyIPO is used as prima facie evidence of trademark ownership. 📘 Explore more insights on IP protection in Malaysia, check-out the Malaysia IP country factsheet here: https://lnkd.in/gZ-g7Mgm (updated factsheet is coming soon). ❓ If you have any further questions on how to protect your IP in SEA, contact us at expert@sea-iphelpdesk.eu #SEAHeldpesk #IntellectualProperty #Malaysia #SouthEastAsia #CountryTip 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭/ 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Malaysia Vectors by Vecteezy Nora Bihari, Benoît Tardy, Hong Anh Nguyen, Trang Doan Ngoc-Phuong
