When my school buddy Edmond from Kahii (Sydney) told me two months ago that he wanted to create a cup of coffee with a floral aroma and tasting notes of blackberry, vanilla, sugar cane, and plum, I was dubious it could be done. Edmond meticulously selected a microlot from one of the best green beans variety of gesha coffee before using precise roasting techniques to achieve the exquisite flavour profile he desired. But even with all this careful preparation, Edmond relies heavily on his baristas to bring out these intricate notes in every cup. Had me thinking, this dedication to crafting the perfect coffee mirrors the approach we take with our IT and security strategies for our customers. Just as Edmond selects and roasts his beans, we develop our IT security strategies based on the "taste" of each organisation and its risk appetite. This means tailoring our Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) frameworks and Business Continuity Plans (BCP) to meet the unique needs and risk tolerance of our clients. However, the real challenge lies in the execution. Just as Edmond’s baristas must skilfully prepare each cup to highlight those original requirements, our IT team must implement these strategies effectively to ensure robust security and continuity for our customers. Excellence in both coffee and cybersecurity comes from a blend of meticulous preparation and flawless execution. By refining our GRC and BCP efforts and ensuring careful implementation, we can achieve outstanding results, just like Edmond does with his coffee. I was privileged enough to try Edmond’s creation today, and I was wrong to doubt him. It tasted even better than it sounds. Day 11 of our 100 days of compliance fun facts! Today I’m switching up the format a lil. Did you know? In 1988 Denny’s, a company that had never closed before decided to give its employees Christmas Day off. 700 of the 1200+ locations had no idea where the keys to locks were because they’d never locked them! Dennys had no closing time policy for things like turning off equipment. After this debacle, they had to write an entire new policy and rekeyed hundreds and hundreds of stores. Takeaway: compliance and regulations don’t have to be hard. We all start somewhere, and if your company has grown quickly and found itself in need of policies and assessments and a looming audit, relax. There are people like us here to help you, with no judgment, just a passion for securing the world. Or in my case, the little guys ☺️

I’ve debated posting about this incident, however given the lack of publicity I figured it needed to be shared within our industry. A Walmart employee of 10 years was killed a few weeks ago (Forklift/Racking related incident), at a Distribution Center in Fort Worth TX. This is currently under investigation from OSHA and Walmart, the details have yet to be released. However the family received conflicting information around this incident and is requesting support. No matter the size of your organization, routine audits of equipment, storage systems, and overall warehouse functions are crucial in maintaining a safe workspace. Overall maintenance of these items has to take place on a routine cadence. I extend my condolences and prayers to the Rios family during this difficult time. I sincerely hope that Walmart will do the right thing and ensure that something like this never happens again. Nothing can replace the value of a lost life. Preventing these tragedies is exactly why Bold exists today. What I didn't do right in the last one year while building BIGCLIQ: 1) Stopped reading. In the rush to acquire new clients, I stopped acquiring new knowledge 2) Quoted less to survive. I should have trusted my skills 3) Was scared to build my team and depended on a third B2B party. The back and forth drained my energy 4) Procrastinated. Yes, I did procrastinate 5) Neglected building my personal brand 6) Compared my progress with others 7) Travelled excessively to avoid the void. What I did right in the last one year while building BigCliq: 1) I didn't give up. I recognized my mistakes and committed to correcting them.
