We’re all familiar with the ABC’s (antecedent-behavior-consequence)…but behavior doesn’t happen in a vacuum and we are social animals. What if the consequence of one’s behavior sets the occasion for the behavior of another? This would be considered an “interlocking contingency”. Then what if these consequences of interlocking contingencies are selected, affecting the group? These would be metacontingencies. This is the basis of behavior analytics at the level of culture. Culture could be any size, such as religious, local, regional, national, world, household, company, store, sports franchise, etc… When we speak of culture, regardless of whether it is in terms of sports, organizations, or family, we are talking about behaviors that are maintained at the level of the metacontingency.
