I have had a few friends enquire about this post, wondering about the jump from for profit to non profit - in particular at Movement Schools. So I thought I would share a few thoughts. Let me say this: BEST MOVE EVER. If you are stuck, in a work with no soul, drained from hours of work and no end in sight on a project that makes little sense to you, GET OUT! There is absolutely no reason to live life unfulfilled. Or if you are absolutely in love with what you do, but have navigated the same industry for a long time and wonder how you could use skills and knowledge outside of banking or consulting to shape your environment with new friends, try it! You might fall in love with it (I did!) Movement Schools is an entrepreneurial, fast moving pace, where you will have significant responsibilities. We are growing and what we do has high impact. The skills you will practice here are highly marketable. At Movement Schools, we maintain a high bar of performance - we talk about efficient processes, scalability to support growth. We talk about financing structures to raise debt in the capital markets, which means practicing investment banking skills. Many of my business partners started in positions just like the one below, and subsequently moved to philanthropic private equity, investment banking, etc. We take training seriously. Here are three signs your SME *does not need* a full-time Finance Director: 1 | Your turnover is too low. If you are an SME with a turnover of less than £20m, you can likely benefit from a part-time Finance Director instead. Just as strategic, just as experienced, but simply for fewer days. 2 | You don't yet have a Finance Controller. This professional will support your SME with a lot of the more manual and data-related tasks. Hiring an FD without already having an FC in place is wasting a lot of time for your full-time FD. 3 | You couldn't afford to spend £100k+ per year. If this salary seems high, then you are not ready for a full-time FD. This is an expected salary for an experienced, valuable professional to join your business. If you're looking to spend in the region of £60-£75k, you're looking at a full-time Finance Manager (less strategic) OR a part-time Finance Director instead (more strategic). So - does your business really need a full-time Finance Director?
