The authors assert the Epictetus is telling us that our happiness is a result of our choices. Our reasoned choices. Happiness is not an amalgamation of our environment or upbringing. This is not a nature versus nurture consideration. It is the choices we make and the consequences of those choices. For my fellow Stoics, this falls under the Dichotomy of Control-only worrying about the things that we have absolute control over. And that's not much. We control our actions, our thoughts, our judgments; all of the things that effect external circumstances but not the external circumstances themselves. In my book, Hard to Keep Happy: How to Maintain Lasting Joy in Challenging Times, I elaborate on these matters several times. Happiness, stability, self-control, all require reasoned actions with the full understanding that we control very little in our own lives. We don't even control the function of our own bodies! Job 39:26-28 highlights the majesty and independence of nature, emphasizing that creatures like the hawk and eagle operate beyond human control. It underscores the wisdom and power of the Creator, suggesting that humans cannot command or fully understand the natural world. Hawks and eagles demonstrate wisdom through their impressive behaviors and adaptations. Hawks are known for their keen awareness and precision, while eagles exhibit strength and strategic thinking. Both birds symbolize the ability to navigate and thrive in challenging environments, reflecting the wisdom and power of the Creator as highlighted in Job 39:26-28.

There's a saying about "going the extra mile". No doubt you have used the statement before. The idea originates from Roman soldiers who had the authority to compel civilians to carry their equipment for one mile (Matthew 5:41). The practice, known as “impressment,” was a way for the Roman military to ensure their troops could move quickly and efficiently without being burdened by their load. In our busy working lives, it can be challenging to go that extra mile because we carry our own responsibilities and pressing deadlines. You have to stop doing less than your best. There’s a compelling story about Jimmy Carter during his time as a naval officer. But then comes a question that stops him cold: “Did you always do your best?” Carter, with a heavy heart, admits he didn’t. The interviewer simply asks, “Why not?” and walks out. That question echoed in Carter’s life forever: “Why didn’t I always do my best?” Now, think about your own path. Reflect on the times gone by, on last year and the years before: Why didn’t you always give it your all? And why are you doing things that you don't think deserve your best?
