Whatever the long-term solution may be, it must include the entire corridor to Vancouver centre, or we will simply move the congestion further north along Highway 99.

Great feature in the TRB's magazine on applying the Safe Systems Approach to rural roads. We especially loved the section on Safe Speeds, which states that 71% of rural fatal crashes in 2021 occurred on roads where the speed limit was 55 mph or higher. "Some strategies include addressing high-speed roadways that quickly become rural town centers' main streets. Within a short distance, the road changes quickly and necessitates that drivers slow from highway speeds to safely navigate a road with pedestrians, bicyclists, and traffic going to or from local businesses." We call these speed transition zones, and we have just the thing to encourage drivers to slow down and be alert to pedestrians and potential hazards.
