To all the brilliant minds receiving their results today, a massive round of applause for your hard work! 🥳 For those embarking on a new adventure at university this September, I’m cheering you on!
Reflecting on my own results day (18 years ago!), I remember the sting of realising that my dental school aspirations were on hold. I felt lost, bouncing from job to job—call centers, video game sales, customer service—none felt right. But then, the Bristol Eye Hospital saw potential in me, and I became a junior ophthalmic science practitioner—a title that helped instill passion into all things eyes!
That was the start of an unexpected journey in eye-care, where I encountered cases that would fascinate even the esteemed Jack Kanski! My A-Level grades faded into the background as I built a career on experience and passion. Eventually, I hit a ceiling and craved more, leading me to study optometry. With Christine Purslow’s keen eye, Cardiff University welcomed me as an undergraduate optometry student, ironically, a course requiring the same A-Level grades I needed for dental school!
Remember, A-Levels are a stepping stone, not the sole gatekeeper of your future. If today didn’t bring the grades you hoped for, don’t lose heart. Your drive and determination are what will propel you forward. Your journey isn’t shaped by today’s results but by the choices you make from here on out.
And a little twist of fate? Marrying a dentist showed me that sometimes, life has a better plan. My exam results didn’t just redirect me; they saved me from a path not meant for me, leading me to a career that brings me joy every day. 😄
Here’s to finding your path, no matter where today’s results may lead you!
For those needing some extra encouragement or wanting to use their exam setbacks as growth, I include an article from earlier this year. It is aimed for optometry students, but some of the messages can apply to us all. Let me know what you think!
