For the first time, I've found myself struggling to juggle the demands of work, raising kids, and caring for elderly parents. It's a whole new chapter, one that has pushed me to redefine my boundaries and priorities. I'm learning to navigate the complexities of being part of the 'sandwich generation.' It’s a journey many of you might be familiar with, and I’m reaching out to share and learn together. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far about maintaining balance in this tumultuous season: -Find Joy Daily: Even on the tough days, there's always a moment of joy to hold onto. Whether it's a brief call with a friend during a long drive or a small win at work, these moments matter. -Stay Connected: On trips to care for my mother-in-law, I use that time to catch up with friends with a good old phone call. It turns a routine drive into a meaningful reconnection, helping me manage the stress of traffic and caregiving. Prioritize Self-Care: I make sure to step outside for a walk or lose myself in an audiobook. These small acts of self-care provide a necessary break from the daily grind. Engage with My Kids: Amidst the chaos, I ensure my children know they're just as important. Spending quality time with them is non-negotiable and crucial for maintaining our family bond. How do you make time and space for your needs and still be a good parent? The pull of different needs in family life can leave you feeling like whatever you do is never enough. And leave you feeling some very uncomfortable emotions - guilt, resentment, anger, loneliness. What I like about this book by Anna Mathur is that it delves into all of the messiness and complexity of modern parenthood and offers some thought provoking reflections. "Raising a Happier Mother" covers many themes which often come up for parents in coaching sessions which is why I decided to cover this one in the next run of The Busy Parent Book Club. I started the book club because I know how hard it is to find the time and head space for some of the great books that are out there for parents - however much they might benefit family life. The book club helps you read one book at a time in manageable chunks. Are you concerned that your child is anxious and worried quite often? Do you see some of the same behaviours that you had as a child, surfacing? Unconsciously our energies and behaviour affect each other in a family. We all were born as part of a family in this present life. However that child you gave birth to, is passing through. They are on their own soul journey. They are born through you and have chose you as parents because they are undergoing training and transformation. In each lifetime they learn how to grow in a way to bring balance, happiness and love to themselves and others around them. So if you see your children questioning your parenting, pushing boundaries or even as adults, living a life that doesn’t come close to the value system you grew them up with, have a conversation with them. Understand their path that they think they have chosen but in reality- their soul is the driver and knows exactly the destination. We have to trust. That’s soul is connected to the quantum field of universal energies. Upgrade your seat to self-care. It’s going to be an amazing experience! It is important for you to set some time for yourself. It is important for you to go spend time with friends and family. It is important for you to do things together as a family. You won’t able to help your children, if you don’t take care of yourself first. Constantly feeling tired, too many things going on at the same time, can’t think what to do next. This is all just too much, don’t you think? I emphasis this all the time, but I think it is a great reminder of what we as parents need to do for ourselves. How do we give our children, the every day skills they need, asking for the favourite food or helping them to be socially interactive. This is not possible if we are constantly are run down. Finding balance between your own needs and your children needs is what every parent deserves and is permitted. I work better when I have worked on my self-care because then I can be present in that moment of overwhelm for my children. For this exact reason, selfcare is a must. I’m going make some time for a quick power nap, need to fuel myself so I can be ready for what’s coming next. Today we closed out Spring Break ✝️☀️🐰❤️ A great week together with daddy taking off, 2 Family Easter’s and a BOILER WIN 🚂 🆙 🖤💛 But the best part...no sinking “it’s over” feeling. I had this feeling almost every Sunday night after having kids while still teaching and knowing what lied ahead—juggling all the things. But, that feeling was REALLY intense at the end of breaks. I never had teaching colleagues of mine who were also moms ever share the same struggle, so I figured it was just me. And that can be isolating. I didn’t start my business to leave teaching. But starting that business when I had VERY little time, allowed me to have OPTIONS when things got tough with in home daycare.
