On this #EarthDay, we would like to introduce once again Suntory Beverage and Food (SBF)‘s commitment to society and nature. As a multifaceted beverage company whose products rely on the blessings of nature, SBF is committed to working with our stakeholders to protect and nurture the natural environment. Indeed, not only is the brand the coolest but so are the three founders Roger Nefkens Dennis Kamst and Almar Fernhout. I genuinely think I am the person that has bought and tried every single non-plastic option of toothpaste on the European market. I tolerated some rather bland (I'm being nice), mushy creams only because of how massive the damage of conventional plastic toothpaste tubes are to planet and I was so relieved when I came across Smyle! Finally an option that was better than what we had before. Funny that sometimes we do just love certain brands and SMYLE is one for me. It's fresh, it's non-toxic for your body (many well-known brands of toothpaste contain plastics in the paste you put in your mouth too - have you checked yours?) and it doesn't suffocate wildlife. Smyle is still a young company and yet their impact is already meaningful and growing. Here's a fun fact: People who brush twice a day use an average of 1 toothpaste tube per month. That means that in 2024, thanks to those that opt for Smyle, we will have saved 5 million tubes together. But what if those of you reading that aren't already buying Smyle tried it too and we smashed that number out of the water? Can we make it more than 5 million plastic tubes displaced by the end of the year? I leave it in your hands and will report back at the end of the year. Let me know if the challenge is on.

You've probably heard by now that Mars has agreed a deal to buy Kellanova for around $36bn. To put that into perspective, that's around $36bn more than I have in my bank account at the moment. It's not the most exciting news in the world of challenger brand innovation, but now that breakfast and confectionery are official bedfellows, I thought I'd look at what else Mars could have done with all that cash... 💲 Bought a small country - with $36bn Mars could have bought the GDP of countries like Latvia, Estonia or Iceland and still had enough left over to send everyone there a lifetime supply of M&Ms. 💲 Send three million people to space - forget about cereals, Mars could have been literal and sent three million people to Mars (and back). 💲 Fund the world's most extravagant theme park - Mars could have built the world's most over-the-top theme park. Imagine a chocolate river ride, cereal-themed roller coasters and candy castles - something to make Willy Wonka jealous. 💲 Bought all the chocolate in the world - they could have cornered the entire chocolate market with $36bn and literally controlled the entire global supply chain - as if chocolate isn't expensive enough at the moment... 💲 Sign 180 Jude Bellinghams - but why stop there when you could just buy the top 7 leagues in Europe with a combined market value of $36bn. The possibilities are endless. Spending $36bn is no small feat and it’s fun to imagine the alternatives. But Mars saw value in Kellanova, and that’s a HUGE move in the FMCG market. Mars is playing the long game. They’re investing in the future and it’s a bold strategy. Let’s see how it plays out.

I'm already a big fan of SUNTORY BEVERAGE & FOOD EUROPE's new CEO Pierre DECROIX. A waffle-cutting straight talker. Why become CEO? "To make an impact." Why pursue sustainability? "Because it's the right thing to do." Pierre also talks about his vision for "sustainable, profitable growth". And he is right: sustainability needs to be seen as a driver of profitability, not an add-on. This week, I interviewed SBFE's CSO Michelle Norman. She was as driven and focussed as the CEO. This week, two wineries from the Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos portfolio achieved the 'Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection' certification. Bodegas Cosme Palacio and Caserío de Dueñas, located in DOCa Rioja and DO Rueda, respectively, now join Viña Mayor, which became the first winery in the DO Ribera del Duero to attain this certification in 2016. SWfCP is the first and only winery-specific certification, establishing rigorous standards that focus on four key areas: reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), water management, waste reduction, as well as energy efficiency and renewables. Social and environmental sustainability are at the core of Entrecanales Domecq e Hijos' vision. Its wineries were Spanish pioneers in achieving Carbon Neutral certification and adopting 100% renewable energy.
