The Great Barrier Reef is home to over 9,000 known species and is the largest coral reef system in the world. Last Summer New drone footage taken this year, devastatingly showed 97% of bleached corals on the North Point Reef on Lizard Island are now dead. The Great Barrier Reef has experienced five mass bleaching events in the last decade with the most recent occurring in March this year, it was the most severe and widespread mass bleaching ever recorded there. This tragedy was part of the world's fourth global coral bleaching event. That declaration was based on significant bleaching in both hemispheres of each ocean basin due to extensive ocean stress. - https://lnkd.in/gvUjHk6S

That’s truly inspiring! Enric Sala’s work with Nat Geo Pristine Seas is a remarkable example of how dedicated efforts can lead to significant environmental recovery. The revival of the coral reefs in the Southern Line Islands is a beacon of hope for marine conservation. It’s amazing to see how these expeditions not only document the beauty and biodiversity of these ecosystems but also contribute to their protection. The fact that 27 areas are now under protection, covering over 6.6 million square kilometers, is a testament to the impact of these efforts. The Arctic and Antarctica are both polar regions with distinct characteristics, with some common aspects. Location and Geography: The Arctic is situated in the Northern Hemisphere, encompassing the Arctic Ocean surrounded by landmasses like Greenland, Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia. Conversely, Antarctica lies in the Southern Hemisphere as a continent surrounded by the Southern Ocean. The Arctic is characterized by an ice-covered ocean interspersed with islands and coastal regions, while Antarctica is a massive ice-covered landmass with towering ice shelves and mountain ranges. Ecosystems: Both regions exhibit polar desert environments with minimal vegetation. The Arctic supports a slightly more diverse flora, including mosses, lichens, and shrubs due to its larger land area, while Antarctica’s vegetation is limited to mosses and algae along its coastal areas. Wildlife: The Arctic is home to iconic species like polar bears, seals, walruses, Arctic foxes, and various migratory birds. In contrast, Antarctica boasts penguins, seals, seabirds, and krill, forming the base of the marine food chain. Average Temperatures: Despite their frigid climates, there’s a significant difference in average temperatures. The Arctic experiences milder temperatures due to its proximity to inhabited landmasses, with averages from -10°C to 0°C . In contrast, Antarctica, being more isolated and elevated, endures much colder temperatures, averaging -10°C to -30°C annually. Countries and Ownership: The Arctic is governed by the Arctic Council, comprising 8 member countries with Arctic territories. Antarctica, however, is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, with no single country owning it. Instead, it is designated as a scientific preserve, collectively managed by signatory nations. A groundbreaking Schmidt Ocean Institute deep-sea expedition has revealed dozens of newly discovered species thriving on the seamounts of the Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges—a chain of underwater mountains off Chile’s coast. Nearly half the species that call these waters home are found nowhere else on earth—but 73% of these seamounts lie in international waters and are currently unprotected.  Thanks to the support of the Coral Reefs of the High Seas Coalition, this discovery shines a spotlight on the urgent need to protect these fragile ecosystems. This coral and brittle stars were spotted during the #SalasyGomezRidge expedition on the Pukao Seamount. The Salas y Gómez Ridge extends off the coast of Chile to Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, in the Central Pacific. Created by volcanism, these underwater mountains provide essential habitats for deep-sea organisms. Many of the species living here exist nowhere else on Earth. The ridge exists on a gradient that spans from high nutrients with lower oxygen in the east to lower nutrients with higher oxygen in the west. This gradient allows light and photosynthetically active radiation, or PAR, to penetrate much deeper; because of these unique conditions, animals and organisms dependent on photosynthesis can survive deeper than elsewhere. These seamounts can support light-dependent communities at deeper depths than elsewhere in the world, and they may be hotspots of biodiversity in a relative desert of nutrient availability.

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐞 At 111 feet wide, 104 feet long, 18 feet high, and 600 feet around this stunning organism in the southwest Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest known coral that was discovered by accident. It is a conglomerate of individual creatures called coral polyps that have grown over 300 years. Instead of a coral reef like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia that is a network of several colonies, this is a standalone coral that has grown uninterrupted for hundreds of years.
