Our latest 'Sustainable in a Generation' progress report makes me proud, as it demonstrates that we can achieve business growth while reducing our carbon footprint.     We have achieved a total GHG reduction of over 16%, or 5.7 million metric tonnes, across our full value chain (from a 2015 baseline) and we are on track to deliver a 50% reduction by the end of 2030 - all while growing our business by more than 60% in the same period.     In the UK specifically, we've been making significant investments to deliver both financial and non-financial value. Some highlights include:    🚚 Enhancing logistics efficiency at our state-of-the-art Gateway facility  💨 Championing renewable energy use with Moy Wind Farm  📦 Innovating packaging with our recyclable paper-wrapped Mars® bar    Today, we celebrate our achievements while recognising there is still more to do. Working within the Mars family of businesses brings me a sense of pride in many ways, but particularly when it comes to our commitment to sustainability. At Mars, we believe that the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today. Just days ago, the 2023 Mars Sustainable in a Generation Report was released, outlining progress against key targets and goals. While there’s more to be done, it’s truly remarkable to see what we’ve accomplished across the organization, and it’s a testament to our commitment to responsible growth. Not only does sharing this information hold us accountable as a company, it encourages others in the industry to increase transparency as well – and I hope it does just that. It was a privilege to work with an all-star team to write the Mars 2023 Sustainable in a Generation Report. We aimed to keep the report at 40 pages, because well, we wanted people to read it. If you did, you'd learn how Mars has achieved a further 8% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2023, doubling our total GHG reduction to 16% since 2015. And, we’re on track to deliver on our goal of a 50% GHG reduction across our entire value chain by the end of the decade. All in the face of significant growth—over 60%—to more than $50 billion in annual sales, we have been able to decouple carbon emissions from business growth. And lot more. 🌍🌱 Sustainable Innovations for Net-Zero Food Systems A recent study reveals that food systems contribute around 35% of global greenhouse gas emissions (~20 GtCO2e/y). This figure is projected to rise with increasing food demands, challenging global climate targets. However, through intensified low-emission practices and carbon sequestration, emissions can potentially be reduced from 21.4 to -2.0 GtCO2e/y without carbon offsets like afforestation. Achieving net-zero food systems requires a diverse approach, including diet shifts and cutting-edge technologies. A promising pathway involves adopting the least emission-intensive practices that sequester carbon effectively. This transition demands cost-effective mitigation, robust governance, and financial innovation in the 2020s, paving the way for affordable, scalable technologies by 2050.
