A world Architecture Day perspective. Dear UIA - International Union of Architects Council, As an architecture student, I appreciate the UIA's efforts to celebrate young architects and provide opportunities such as the upcoming UIA Young Architects Competition. However, while the theme of empowering the next generation is inspiring, I feel compelled to voice my concern regarding the broken architectural systems that many young architects face today. Despite the rhetoric of inclusion and participation, the harsh reality for many young professionals is a financial struggle that forces them to divert from their passion for architecture. The systems in place often do not offer the economic stability, mentorship, or opportunities needed to thrive. The profession has increasingly become inaccessible due to exploitative practices, inadequate pay, and a lack of proper support networks. These systemic issues have left many young architects disillusioned and financially unstable, leading them to abandon the field or pursue alternative careers where they feel more valued. The call to action for young architects to participate in urban design and contribute to sustainable development is ambitious, but how can we fully engage when the foundation we stand on is fragile? The profession needs reform beyond competition announcements and symbolic celebrations. We need to address issues such as fair wages, healthy work environments, and meaningful mentorship, ensuring that young architects are not only empowered to create but are also able to thrive financially and personally in this field. While I applaud the UIA’s commitment to showcasing young architects' ideas, let us also ensure that these same architects have the support necessary to build resilient careers within the profession. We must fix the broken systems that are holding us back. Respectfully submitted. To all the young architects out there: Your creativity and passion are essential in shaping the future, but never forget to advocate for your worth. While we are called to build sustainable cities, let us also build a sustainable profession for ourselves one that values our work, time, and potential. Stand strong, push for reform, and together we can reshape not only the urban landscapes but also the architecture systems that support our careers. #architecture #youngarchitects #worldarchitectureday #sustainableprofessions #youngprofessionals

RSVP for tickets to The LSA's upcoming panel discussion 'Will you still want me When I’m nothing new?' here: https://lnkd.in/e9aUvBBx The speakers will confront questions like: 🟢 What does architecture look like when professionals and the public intimately understand the elements that make up their buildings? 🟢 How does architecture change when its constituent parts are treated as specific objects rather than generic commodities? 🟢 How will the way we value materials change if we move beyond hierarchal historical concepts of material heritage? 🟢 Will we still want things when they’re nothing new? 12 February 2025, 7pm The London School of Architecture

EA thought of the day... “Consequently, since this study is so vast in extent, embellished and enriched as it is with many different kinds of learning, I think that men have no right to profess themselves architects hastily, without having climbed from boyhood the steps of these studies and thus, nursed by the knowledge of many arts and sciences, having reached the heights of the holy ground of architecture.” — Vitruvius, The Ten Books on Architecture #EnterpriseArchitecture

World Architecture Day 2024 highlights urban issues, promotes the construction of more sustainable and equitable cities for everyone. Every year on the first Monday of October, World Architecture Day emphasises architecture's strategic impact in creating our surroundings. Organised by the International Union of Architects (UIA), since 1986, the congress aims to stimulate dialogue on architectural innovation and the accompanying demands faced by today's architects. The theme for this year is “Empowering the Next Generation to Participate in Urban Design,” which calls to embrace urban design that will benefit generations to come. It emphasises the contributions of young architects in creating sustainable, inclusive cities that meet the diverse needs of today's society. #MadamArchitect #WorldArchitectureDay #2024

Every utopian vision stands on the rickety foundations of a dystopian society that must exist alongside the utopian one. Architects dream of a perfect urban environment where imperfections are surgically removed and exiled. But the exiled contents do not disappear. They are simply repressed. Like the example that Freud gave of the man who is asked to leave the seminar hall but remains outside banging on the door and creating a nuisance nonetheless, dystopia presents a challenge for the perfect vision of utopia. The task of the architect and urban planner is not divide the urban landscape into utopia and dystopia, but to assimilate the two into a wholeness. The man banging at the door must be let in again, and negotiated with so that the seminar can proceed without disturbance. #utopia #dystopia #dystopian #architecture #urbanplanning
