Since joining Prosperity 24/7, I've come to realise that there's not much that brings us together like a good Love to Ride challenge. We managed to top our respective leaderboards in the recent May challenge, although Greener Kirkcaldy gave us an excellent run for our money. We got new people involved in the challenge, we saved an estimated 546lb CO2 through cycling instead of driving and as well as cheering on our usual stalwarts, I also discovered which colleagues will come through last thing on a Friday and undertake a round-the-island-cycle for the extra miles... Sure, winning is fun but what's really nice is to see the behaviour changes starting to take root in the segment of our company that aren't die-hard cyclists (and I include myself in that). Last September I noted that I'm a reluctant cyclist but I'm becoming less reluctant and more willing to do that commute by bicycle. I've also noticed our bike store becoming busier and less frequent cyclists populating the Love to Ride feed more often. That's no mean feat. As someone who deals with change while delivering projects, change isn't always easy to embed but I've always been a fan of gamification as motivation in the right settings. And one of those right settings will be Prosperity Day in September, when our colleagues and clients will compete for bragging rights but also for the much better reason of raising money for charity - this year, we're supporting Healing Waves UK and Jersey Hospice Care - two very deserving charities. Fundraising has been tough for the past 4 years with no sign of it easing Fundraising through challenge events are popular with your supporters especially firewalking events but since the pandemic I’ve noticed a decline in quality and safety Big promises are made by some firewalk providers that their firewalk will be a spectacular, transformative experience. You post what they promise, an amazing event with images of flames and happy people but the reality was as exciting as a damp squib (think New Year's fireworks display in London versus a £100 box of fireworks in your back garden) Chaotic, cluttered, disorganised, disappointing, dull They rock up with some red and white tape to attach to whatever structures are in place, that’s if they’ve even thought about barriers, wood in the boot of their car (not kidding), a some hi-viz vests (why? According to the Ministry of Health, stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in Singapore, with a prevalence of 4 per cent among adults aged 50 and above. The latest Singapore Stroke Registry Report in 2020 stated that the disease accounted for 8 per cent of deaths here. It is also the biggest cause of long-term disability, which includes impaired speech, restricted physical abilities, weakness or paralysis of limbs on one side of the body, and a slowed ability to communicate. While Singaporeans are living longer, stroke incidences have almost doubled in the past decade. There is also a rise in young people getting stroke, often leaving them unable to work and return to their normal routines. Established in 2015, S3 is the first and only stroke-focused community rehabilitation and wellness agency dedicated to meeting the needs of post-stroke survivors and their caregivers across Singapore. With S3, post-discharge survivors of stroke are able to receive care continuum through rehabilitation that integrates advanced assistive technologies with conventional therapy as well as their signature S3 Wellness programme supporting cognitive and psychosocial development in order to maximise recovery potential, independence and reintegration. I completely agree that it's too common for large organisations in the charity sector to take over contracts from small, community-led groups. This undermines the unique value these smaller organisations, driven by lived experience, bring. It's time for the government and stakeholders to recognise their importance and provide them with more leadership and representation opportunities. These grassroots organisations do the hard work and achieve the results, yet larger entities often take the credit and financial gains. Supporting and empowering small, lived experience organisations is crucial for fostering genuine community engagement and impactful services.
