They often are the best programmer, because they get to expirience why you shouldn't turn on a pump before opening the chiller isolation valve!!! Field expirience is the best way to learn before go into engineering.
The best Controls Engineers are the ones who spend a lot of time in the field. If you are inexperienced, get out in the field as much as possible. It's dirty, hard, and uncomfortable but it's the best thing for you. Don't waste your time sitting behind a desk.

Field > office > work from home. In terms of how fast you can gain experience, I would say these are at least an order of magnitude apart from each other.
The best Controls Engineers are the ones who spend a lot of time in the field. If you are inexperienced, get out in the field as much as possible. It's dirty, hard, and uncomfortable but it's the best thing for you. Don't waste your time sitting behind a desk.
