Mercer's annual look at the costs of expatriation. The most expensive cities in Asia and globally are Singapore and Hong Kong. Shanghai and Beijing are the next most expensive cities in Asia. One interesting tidbit is this: :Comparing the data on costs and quality of living highlights the challenge of finding the sweet spot between the two — in other words, a city that combines low costs with a high quality of life. According to Mercer’s recent data, just eight cities in the ranking have achieved this (Ljubljana, Montreal, Warsaw, Zagreb, Budapest, Panama City, Santiago and Kuala Lumpur)." Now one observation is that I do agree quality of life in Montreal is good, but is it really affordable? on the flip side, Shanghai quality of life is marked as low. For someone who had lived here a long time, I have to disagree. The city is expensive but where it shines is quality of life (convenient, ultra safe, cosmopolitan - but yes you need a VPN)
