21st January is a special day in the UK rodent calendar—Red Squirrel Appreciation Day! It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate these incredible creatures, my business namesake, and, most importantly, raise awareness about the threats driving them toward extinction. Once common across the UK, red squirrels have been nearly wiped out since the introduction of their larger, more invasive cousins from North America in the 1900s. But what do squirrels and strategists have in common? Perhaps more than you’d think. While I’d struggle to track down a red squirrel, finding exceptional strategists is what I do best—though it’s no less challenging in today’s competitive market. Maybe that makes me a Strategist Conservationist. Great strategists are becoming the red squirrels of adland: rare, invaluable, and worth conserving. And just as protecting red squirrels relies on creating the right environment, retaining strategy talent depends on improving their habitat, too.
