Stay Safe and Keep Your Kids Safe on Halloween
The biggest risk to kids on Halloween comes from collisions with automobiles. With all the excitement of friends about in the neighborhood after dark and wearing special costumes, it can be difficult for cars to see children and challenging for kids to see and recognize the danger from cars. Adults need to take special care to supervise street crossings even for kids who are “too old” to normally need such supervision. Finding ways to make costumes reflective, incorporating light features into costumes, and taking action as a neighborhood to slow local traffic on this one evening are valuable mitigations that can help prevent serious injuries. Halloween, characterized by horror movies, costumes, and trick-or-treating, highlights the relationship between culture and public policy. On our calendars, Halloween is a special time where kids enjoy newfound freedom and concerns over safety often rise. Encouraged to knock on a stranger’s door with the threat of a “trick,” the perceived danger of children's trick-or-treating can become amplified.
Tracing how this perceived danger affects prevention efforts reveals the challenges professionals in our field face when advocating for policies that promote public safety. Last year, David Prescott reviewed the complexity of public safety policies developed around this event.

Let’s spark a safe Halloween! Watch out for each other, and say no to violence!
Tonight, we gathered at Heart Revolution Church for an impactful youth panel and block party dedicated to discussing gun violence prevention and ensuring safety this Halloween. We believe that creating a safe environment for our youth is paramount, especially during a celebration that is meant to be filled with fun, creativity, and community spirit.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the inspiring youth leadership at Heart Revolution Church. Your dedication to empowering our young people and fostering meaningful conversations is invaluable. We also want to extend our gratitude to our devoted team member, Jeff Raya, for his tireless efforts in making this event possible. Your commitment to our cause truly made a difference.
As Halloween approaches, it is important for both parents and youth to remember that safety should always come first. This holiday, filled with costumes, candy, and excitement, can sometimes bring unexpected challenges. In addition to the usual safety precautions, it’s crucial to address the concerning issues of gun and gang violence—especially at parties and other gatherings. Open dialogue about these realities can help us equip our youth with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate potentially dangerous situations.
Parents, please take the time to discuss safety measures with your children before they head out to trick-or-treat or attend parties. Encourage them to stay in groups, plan their routes, and always keep their phones handy. Remind them to be aware of their surroundings and to trust their instincts. Additionally, advise them to be cautious when attending parties, as these are environments that can sometimes cultivate tensions or lead to violence. Your guidance plays a crucial role in their safety.
To the youth, remember that you have the power to influence your peers. By looking out for one another and fostering a sense of community, you can help create a safe environment for everyone. Stay vigilant, especially at crowded events, and don’t hesitate to speak up if something doesn’t feel right. Engaging in conversations about safety and making a commitment to peaceful interactions can significantly reduce the chances of escalating situations.
Let us come together as a community to ensure that this Halloween is a night of joy and safety. By uniting our efforts, we can create a space where everyone feels secure while celebrating the season. Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for brighter, safer futures, free from the shadows of violence and fear.

Many kids love the traditional trick-or-treating on Halloween night, but today, trick-or-treating can be unsafe for kids in some areas and neighborhoods. Due to safety concerns, some communities are setting assigned hours for trick-or-treating or doing it on Halloween afternoon instead of after dark. For some parents, trick-or-treating is not an option; sending their kids out into the neighborhood is just too unsafe.

Halloween is only a day away, and the Law Office of B. Shannon Saunders is sharing some helpful tips for celebrating safely with your family.
Don’t let the spookiest night turn into a fright, always prioritize safety while trick-or-treating. With young children being especially vulnerable to pedestrian injuries (as they go house-to-house), parents should keep them close by and walk beside them at designated crosswalks.
Follow these:
💡Stick to trick-or-treating in well-lit areas and familiar neighborhoods.
⭐️Choose costumes that are visible and flame resistant!
🔦Give children flashlights and glow sticks to carry so they can be easily seen by you and others.
🚘🛑 Drivers, do your part in making this Halloween a little less of a scare for parents. Beware of trick-or-treaters crossing the street, turn on your headlights, and be sure to drive slow.
Keep your Halloween from being the wrong kind of scary. Trick-or-treat smarter, not scarier. Happy haunting!
