If you or someone you know is heading to college or training this fall and hasn’t filled out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), now is the time! Don’t let misconceptions about the FAFSA or school affordability hold you back. Attend a VSAC FAFSA filing event this summer, virtually or in person. If you attend in person, you will receive a $25 gas gift card to help cover travel costs. For more information about how to get help with filing your FAFSA, online or in person, check out the VSAC Events Calendar: https://lnkd.in/gp7sk_yN The FAFSA is your gateway to accessing federal grants, loans, and work-study funds and for most people, filling it out takes just a few minutes. Filling out the FAFSA will help you understand the financial resources that can significantly reduce the burden of school expenses for you and your family—even if you’re still not sure about whether you will go. Financial aid can make a big difference, and maybe even open new doors. VSAC is here to help answer questions so you can unlock the real cost of your education and invest in your future. Visit vsac.org/FAFSA for more information about how VSAC can help.

Direct payment of tuition to an educational institution is not considered a taxable gift. Therefore, you're able to "give away" more than $18,000 per year (the annual federal gift tax exclusion) for your grandchild's college education and not worry about gift taxes. However, colleges may reduce a student's institutional financial aid by the amount of your payment. So before sending a check, ask the college how it will affect your grandchild's eligibility for college-based aid.

Should I make tuition payments directly to my grandchild's college or should I contribute to a 529 plan instead?

By contributing to a 529 education savings plan account and potentially avoiding federal gift tax, offering a gift to a beneficiary of any age. 👉 Explore the option to contribute up to five years' worth of the annual gift tax exclusion amount in a single year, subject to specific conditions. 👉 Utilize 529 funds for qualified higher education expenses or allocate up to $10,000 annually for primary or secondary school tuition expenses. #TaxTip #529Plan #EducationSavings #TaxSavings
