The only viable option for controlling wild settlement of Pacific oysters is through commercialisation of this natural resource. This can only be sustainably undertaken by an industry backed by Government. Managed correctly, this approach can provide multiple ecosystem services, increase diversity & create economic opportunities in coastal areas.

Good luck. There is no market for that.

Interesting and nuanced article. We are facing the same issues in Sweden. We are working with the approach “dynamic management” in the DynamO project (https://www.ivl.se/english/ivl/project/dynamo.html) to solve this, i.e. different management goals and methods depending on how far the oyster invasion has progressed.

Given that they grow better, form reefs and do better in warmer temperatures than natives we should be using Pacifics as a conservation tool.

Agree 100% Martin, Pacific Oysters are here to stay so we should start managing this "wild" resource for the benefit of the community and stop bemoaning the reality.
