I'm very interested in the way that media covers wildfire in the West. The New York Times publishes articles like this (gift link) every so often, reminding me of how simpleminded these pieces are. They focus almost exclusively on trauma and dramatics and fail to balance that with: 1. The role of fire in the ecosystem and California's natural history 2. How we're learning from changing weather patterns and impacts on both prescribed burn windows and risks for high severity wildfire 3. How we're adapting and thinking about safety and mitigation differently 4. What it's costing (in dollars and impacts) to adapt to and fight wildfires, and why we use military terminology and approaches to respond to wildfire 5. Understanding the different responses that can be made to wildfire 6. The sometimes conflicting and perverse incentives that operate within CalFire and the US Forest Service 7. One useful resource I’ve found when researching PFAS is this book about the history of 3M. It was published in 1990 when their research and development of fluorocarbons was seen as a massive success story. While we know when certain things were invented, it’s hard to know when they really started to make their way into the marketplace. The 1950s were largely a period of research and development with struggling sales; it wasn’t until 1959 that the fluorocarbon division 3M became profitable. By the 1960s PFAS started to gain a little steam in the general market but there was a slow adoption rate. According to the book, the new wonder chemical “Iike many innovative products--was difficult to sell.” In particular, it was “difficult to get prospects to grasp its utility and value” but also “there was the matter of the high price.” So, while PFAS were first invented in 1938 and started entering the market in the 1940s and 1950s, it took until the 1970s/1980s for many uses to really hit the mainstream. #PFAS #PFOA #PFOA #EPA #CERCLA #ESA #CRE

What a week! I finally rotated off my volunteer work with Watch Duty and my local VOAD (volunteer organizations active in disaster), working first on the Gold Complex fires in Plumas County and then the #ParkFire just to our west. It was very challenging but rewarding to support my neighbors by producing current and accurate reporting on evacuations, road closures, shelters, and information sources for our latest megafire. In the midst of the chaos I was making notes about the connections between the work we do on resiliency, what happens during response, and the ways that communities recover from disasters. I've had a chance to work across all these phases, and we have a lot of work ahead to address real human concerns. (Snacks are very important in crisis management!)

When your day takes a dramatic turn... This afternoon lightning strikes in Plumas County started several very dangerous fires. To provide real time intelligence and situational awareness to Plumas County residents, I've been reporting all afternoon through my volunteer work with Watch Duty. You can see our reporting either through the website or by downloading the app, and from there you can find links and resources along with photos for the Mill Fires (also known as the Gold Complex) and the Smith Fire. Night operations are continuing this evening. The coming days are going to be a challenge and the weather is not going to be on our side, so I'll be on the job with Watch Duty and leading our local VOAD - voluntary organizations active in disaster. https://lnkd.in/gZq5cBbm

Confirmation of what we've been experiencing on the ground.
A new study shows that extreme wildfires around the world have more than doubled in the past 20 years—and in the western U.S. and Canada, they've increased more than *10-fold.* It's compelling new data to support what those of us in North America can already see every summer: a warming world is making fire season much more intense and dangerous. But why the focus on "extreme" wildfires? It turns out, if you just count the number of wildfires that start every year, you'd think that wildfire season was the same as ever, or maybe even modestly declining. As Dr. Daniel Swain of UCLA Environment and The Nature Conservancy explained on our podcast last year, "The problem is not that we're seeing more fires. The problem is that the fires that we're seeing are more intense and more destructive." And this means that, while the problem is easy to see, it's actually a bit challenging to measure. This week's new study measured the "radiative power" of clusters of wildfires to get at the new extremes. (You can read the full study in Nature—https://lnkd.in/d-AxWwPZ a nice summary in The New York Times: https://lnkd.in/dpXXVy_v.) But you could also measure the acres burned, or structures destroyed, or the amount of smoke, and get different pictures of the full scale of the challenge we're facing. That's why research like this is important: it lets us grapple with how wildfire is actually changing, so we can guard against the real impacts (protecting ourselves from smoke, building communities to be resilient to growing fires), and not focus on reducing the *number* of wildfires, which could be counterproductive. California Department of Insurance just issued its proposed regulations that allow the use of catastrophe modeling in setting premiums for residential insurance. Despite numerous calls from consumer advocates for the Department to incorporate standards for the models to be used and for there to be a public model with transparency in methods and assumptions, the proposed regulation does not address this concern.
