It is my great pleasure to share Shina Peng's personal project and work on being [ハーフ] Ha-fu in Japan.
Growing up in an international school provided "half" kids or 'third culture kids' (TCKs) like myself and my peers, with a sense of comfort and belonging to the wider global community. As my school and household were filled with more than one cultural background, my norm has always been "the more diversity, the more representative of the world", which greatly contrasted with Japan's high value for conformity and not standing out.
Inevitably, being from 2(+) different cultures will bring a plethora of questions to others, even oneself, about your identity, what and where home is, asked in genuinely curious but also, unfortunately, in disrespectful ways. The more globalised the world becomes, the more normal mixed kids or TCKs will become. Yet this norm will most likely remain challenging in countries like Japan.
Please read the article "There’s Not Just One Way to Be Japanese" and Shina's personal website to hear the authentic testimonies of those she beautifully photographed.
