Food Day: Reviving Underutilized Crops for a Sustainable Future As the global population continues to rise, the demand for food increases, yet the limited germplasm of major food crops restricts production. This is where alternative crops come in—once widely grown, many of these crops are now nearing extinction due to low recognition and cultivation. The Society of Underutilized Legumes was established to revive these crops and promote their role in supporting sustainability and food security. Today, at the exhibition stand of the 6th International Conference and Stakeholders Meeting of the Society of Underutilized Legumes, hosted by GRC IITA, we showcased delicious snacks made from Bambara groundnut and winged beans—including cookies, chinchin, akara chips, okpa, bread, moimoi, porridge, and cake. This demonstrates the incredible potential of these underutilized crops and highlights the urgent need to revive and promote them for sustainable food production. On this World Food Day, let's give a shout-out to the researchers, breeders, and farmers who work tirelessly to prevent famine and ensure a sustainable future. Let’s ensure we put all hands on deck to prevent our ancient crops from going into total extinction. #WorldFoodDay #SocietyofUnderutilizedcrop #GeneticResourceCenterInternationalInstituteOfTropicalAgriculture

Cultivating a Greener Future, One Seed at a Time! 🌱 Excited to share our progress on our organic vegetable garden initiative. We've recently sown a diverse range of nutritious crops, including turnips, carrots, radish, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beetroot, peas, lettuce, and spinach. These vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a healthy and sustainable addition to our company's employee mess. Last year, we successfully produced 1.8 tons of turnips, 1.25 tons of carrots, 1 ton of radish, 1.6 tons of spinach, and 0.5 tons of cauliflower. By embracing organic farming practices, we're not only providing our employees wholesome fresh food, but also contributing to carbon sequestration and climate mitigation. Additionally all hydroponic systems I know about use plastic which leaches into the water and many likely use synthetic fertilizers.
A better blueberry has arrived. 🫐 It's shedding light on the lack of integrity of current organic standards. betterful® is new AC Foods regenerative blueberry brand focused on soil health. This new blueberry on the block goes beyond organic. Its impact stretches deep down into the soils and far past the farm gates. On the farms, they've planted 170 acres of pollinator habitat, resulting in a 267% increase in wild pollinator species and similar increase in beneficial predator insect species since 2016. And since 2018, they’ve witnessed a 127% increase in organic matter. While also reducing their their water (30%) and energy use (46%) per pound of blueberries. But the blueberry industry has been trodding down a different path. As much as 25% of the blueberry cultivation in Mexico is now using soilless medium and hydroponic methods for cultivation. And America is the only country that allows hydroponic cultivation to be certified organic. To put it lightly, organic certification on blueberries doesn't equal more nutrition. Matter of fact, research from the Bionutrient Food Association shows blueberries could have anywhere from 3,000 units or 43,000 units of antioxidant compounds.* More than 13:1 variation! And one of the leading indicators for differences in nutrient density? How healthy and alive the soil is where the crops being grown. Not every blueberry is equal, though I don't want to encourage less blueberry eating. Just opt for ones grown in soil, preferably healthy soils from regenerative farms. #soilhealth #sustainableagriculture #farming #agriculture #organicfarming #regenerativeagriculture #farm #organic #cpg #climatechange #food

All things pertaining to #agriculture #regenerativeagriculture #sustainableagriculture and #food, really strike me at the core of being the highest of importance. As a 20-year-plus licensed massage therapist in Washington State, a nutrition and health advocate, as well as a mother of 4 who cares deeply about the nutrient density of the food our family is ingesting, I could not be happier with the amount of people working hard in all sectors of this industry. From #farmtotable, equitable measures to bring #localgrown fruit, veggies, and meat 🍖 to our #school and #hospital institutions is high on my list of actionable items to #advocate for. In a world 🌎 where #kpi's and #profits reign, quality food, as much as quality relationships 👌, still move me more. #risetogether #economy #foodsovereignty #foodsource #quality #equity #ag #agriculture #education #truth #choices #networking #peopleoverprofits #marketing #healthmatters #wellnessadvocate #freedomgrantedllc

The combination of the balmy tropical climate of Nicaragua and the fertile volcanic soil grows the most delicious bananas with a rich texture and vibrant flavorful taste. Our Regenerative Organic Certified® bananas are a unique Gros Michel heirloom variety, grown in the nutrient-rich soil of northern Nicaragua, where our partnering smallholder farmers use regenerative organic farming techniques to draw down atmospheric carbon into the soil to cool the earth. The banana mother plants take about nine months to bear fruit, and at this time, an exotic pink flower will bloom at the top of the banana’s trunk. As the flower grows, it unveils clusters of bananas. 🍌 🍌 🍌 To harvest the bananas the farmers use a machete to cut through the thick stem, which they afterward use as compost or to protect the soil as a groundcover. Visit our Storybird site to learn more about where our bananas come from and how they get to you. 🐦 https://lnkd.in/g5zQ4JZZ #solorganica #organicfruit #regenerativeorganic #regenerativeorganiccertified #regenerativeagriculture #bcorp #bcorporation #tropicalfruits #exoticfruits #driedfru #purees #IQF #wholesalefoods #nicaragua #dragonfruit #pitahaya #superfruits #smoothies #fairtrade #nongmo #regenerative #soilhealth

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 🍫 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 – 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 🦟 When we think of pollinators, bees and butterflies often come to mind. However, there's a lesser-known group of tiny heroes that play a crucial role in the world of chocolate – midges. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙮 𝙈𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙨 Forcipomyia, a genus of midges, are the primary pollinators of cacao trees. Their small size allows them to access the pollen-producing parts of the cacao plant's tiny flowers, making them the perfect partners for pollination. 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙂𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙨 Unfortunately, these tiny flies are facing threats from climate change and unsustainable farming practices in the very industry they serve. Recent studies have shown that these midges prefer to breed in the shady undergrowth of cacao plants, but farmers are clearing this undergrowth to make way for more evergreen cacao. 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 Without these little chocolate heroes and their cousins, the world would be deprived of the beloved treat we all know and love. It's time to start tracking and protecting these vital pollinators to ensure the sustainability of the chocolate industry. Who needs to see this?
