Things That Worked! Chevrolet Small Block V8 Making its debut in 1955, the Chevrolet V8 was not only simple in its design, it was lightweight and durable. Growing up, most people became familiar with this engine in various sizes. In an effort to show how many size or displacements there were, below are the cubic inch and liter sizes over the years. 265 (4.3 L) 283 (4.6 L) 307 (5.0 L) 302 (4.9 L) 327 (5.4 L) 350 (5.7 L) 400 (6.6 L) 262 (4.3 L) 305 (5.0 L) 267 (4.4 L) Some of the engine sizes are similar, but their bore and stroke are different to meet the needs of the powerplant given the vehicles and production era. The most familiar engine to most is the "350" or 5.7 liter, followed by the "305" or 5.0 liter. People from my era grew up on this engine and learned to work on it and keep it tuned. There were also a plethora of aftermarket performance parts that you could easily add on. I suppose that today we would describe this engine in terms of scalability. Just look at how many combinations to a basic great idea! There is a lesson to be learned here by laying down a foundation where you can make incremental changes without re-inventing the entire product. Keep this concept in mind as you build workflows that may need to accommodate additional volume as well as a natural point to plug in a new subroutine to your work. While today's engines have come a long way from the cast iron blocks from the past, we need to learn lessons about simplicity, well thought-out plans and scalability.

There is a concept about replacing conventional wheels with spherical ones. The spherical wheels have advantages and disadvantages such as increased cost, like the levitation by magnets proposed by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
