Associate Director for Policy & Advocacy at Maryland’s Office of Overdose Response | Improving Access to Evidence-Based Overdose Prevention Strategies

Earlier this month, I trained over 200 employees at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) on how to use naloxone when responding to an overdose. I also presented about the neurobiological basis and social determinants of substance use disorder, the influence of trauma on substance use, and recovery capital. I love giving presentations like this because this information helps illuminate the important role policymakers play in disrupting the social and environmental factors that compound trauma and substance use disorder across generations. By the same token, policy decisions can also positively or negatively influence the factors that help an individual achieve and maintain recovery. The staff at DHCD were extremely engaged throughout the presentation and asked great questions. Thanks to DHCD for being so welcoming and inviting me to share this information on behalf of Maryland’s Office of Overdose Response.
