"The [TOMODACHI Kibou For Maui] project fosters healing, leadership development, knowledge sharing and resiliency by facilitating delegations of students and a delegation of leaders across sectors from Maui to Japan to meet with those involved with the recovery efforts of the Great East Japan Earthquake in the Tohoku region," USJC Board Member Yoh Kawanami (Hawaiian Electric, JALD '24) shared. YOUTH LEADERSHIP: CURTLEIGH ALAART'S ACHIEVEMENTS AT THE Y20 SUMMIT   Between August 10th and 17th, Curtleigh Alaart had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Youth Engagement Group of the G20 Brasil 2024 Summit, known formally as the Y20 Summit, in vibrant Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This summit brought together youth delegates from across the globe to tackle the pressing issues facing young people today and to craft a formal communiqué for the G20 leaders. Technical sessions provided delegates the opportunity to present their policy proposals across five tracks, with Curtleigh Alaart focusing on the Global Governance Reform track. Alaart’s proposal, addressing the impact of AI on democratic processes and highlighting the dangers of AI in cyber warfare and advanced military techniques, was successfully incorporated into the communiqué. This achievement underscored the significant contribution Curtleigh made to the summit. The Y20 Summit was a testament to the power of youth engagement in global governance, and it is hoped that the impact of this experience will drive positive change. Since its inception, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has been a cornerstone for empowering and nurturing the next generation of African leaders. One of the greatest impacts of the Mandela Washington Fellowship is how it equips young African leaders with the practical skills needed to manage and grow meaningful organisations. During my fellowship journey, I had the privilege of meeting Ida Puliwa, Founder and Executive Director of Othakarhaka - Passing on the kindness Foundation. Ida is a shining example of how the leadership skills gained through the fellowship are driving change, as she continues to empower rural communities in Malawi. For me, the fellowship not only strengthened my leadership at Reach out to Girls and Solutions Inc—where we develop innovations like SoilSmart—but it also transformed my role as Innovation Hub Manager at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). Reflecting on what Leadership Coach, Aaron Peterson, taught me during the program, I’ve been able to apply his lessons on servant leadership, strategic thinking, and resilience in my day-to-day work. Whether it’s guiding startups at the Innovation Hub or leading new projects, the fellowship equipped me with the tools to drive innovation and growth. The Mandela Washington Fellowship didn’t just teach Ida and I how to lead—it challenged us to think deeply about creating sustainable, long-term change in our communities. I'm thrilled to have completed the National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL) online course. A pioneering initiative developed by Concern Worldwide US, International Medical Corps and Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Funded by USAID's Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, this program is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of humanitarian leaders.
