These special play sessions provided a calmer, quieter, lower-stimulation experience for 1,060 children and caregivers experiencing Autism, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, and many other physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges. How can we best help autistic children and adolescents establish friendships? One way is to view friendship-making as a set of skills that can be identified and practiced, and then helping the learner achieve some proficiency and comfort when socializing with others. As we head into Autism Awareness Month, I think it is good to remember...please do not ask autistic people to work for free. 30% of autistic people are employed that means 70% are unemployed. Many of the autistic people who are working, are in roles that they are over qualified for. Many autistic people work self-employed roles or as an entrepreneur because they are yet to find an employer who will support their neurodivergence. Autistic people sharing their experiences of neurodivergence are offering you an insight that deserves compensation. Autistic people who work informing inclusive processes and practices deserve compensation. Please do not ask us to work for free! It was a pleasure to lead a talk about neurodiversity in the workplace at Phaidon International, London. Building awareness about neurodiversity, empathetic mentoring and coaching, and how to implement long-term neuroinclusive business practices, is essential to create a workplace climate which recognises, supports and actively promotes the strengths, unique perspectives and well-being of neurodivergent employees. Embracing neurodiversity in the workplace goes beyond inclusive hiring; it involves fostering an environment where diverse ways of thinking and working are not just accepted, but celebrated. Recognising the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals is key to maximising their potential and boosting overall team performance. By harnessing neurodivergent strengths and providing necessary support, organisations can unlock a wealth of talent and innovation. Therefore, neuroinclusive practices such as offering reasonable adjustments, providing clear and consistent communication channels, and delivering tailored support programmes, can make a significant difference in the professional growth and well-being of neurodivergent employees. Furthermore, training managers and colleagues to be more empathetic and understanding towards neurodiversity can help create a more supportive and inclusive workplace for all.
