Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine sets the stage for every child to imagine and learn through play. Mascoma Bank is pleased to support this organization. “Thanks to Mascoma Bank’s support, the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine hosted 10 Play Your Way sessions in 2024. These special play sessions provided a calmer, quieter, lower-stimulation experience for 1,060 children and caregivers experiencing Autism, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, and many other physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges. Thanks to Mascoma Bank, these sessions were offered completely free of charge to these visitors, removing any financial barriers that might have prevented families from participating.” -Mariah Healy, Director of Development.

[This column was published in the West Springfield Republican on January 25, 2024.] Thank you to Jenna Garvey, M.Ed., LABA, BCBA, Clinical Director at the May Center School for Autism and Developmental Disabilities in Chicopee, Mass., for offering her expertise on this important subject. Social connection is important for everyone, but sometimes, making and maintaining friendships can be a challenge. This can be even more daunting for individuals on the autism spectrum, because a defining characteristic of the disorder is difficulty interpreting social cues. How can we best help autistic children and adolescents establish friendships? One way is to view friendship-making as a set of skills that can be identified and practiced, and then helping the learner achieve some proficiency and comfort when socializing with others. This will make the process a little less intimidating. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3Oh7v4D

Latest blog from The Children's Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center Adoption & Permanency Program!
Engaging and dynamic social worker and trainer with a focus on trauma informed, inclusive, and interdisciplinary approaches to care.
I’m little late sharing, but my latest blog from April is personal to me and strikes at the core of my passion for the work we do at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh. I hope it illustrates why our trauma informed care iniatives integrate diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion principles to create healing centered approaches towards the families we serve. “…care is not trauma informed without also being neuroaffirming, and we lead in our field with that mission.” https://lnkd.in/eDHQ6jNR

Founder of ND Perspective, Neurodiversity Rights Advocate, Psychologist & Neuro-Inclusion Specialist
As we head into Autism Awareness Month, I think it is good to remember...please do not ask autistic people to work for free. 30% of autistic people are employed that means 70% are unemployed. Many of the autistic people who are working, are in roles that they are over qualified for. Many autistic people work self-employed roles or as an entrepreneur because they are yet to find an employer who will support their neurodivergence. Autistic people sharing their experiences of neurodivergence are offering you an insight that deserves compensation. Autistic people who work informing inclusive processes and practices deserve compensation. Please do not ask us to work for free! Robert Naseef, Ph.D. and Stephen Shore believe that new #labels will further #stigmatize autistic individuals. They call for #unity as a diverse, heterogeneous community of autistic people, parents, professionals, and researchers. “Let’s go forward by focusing on every autistic person’s right to access individualized, #PersonCenteredServices that identify specific needs and personalized support for using their strengths for success in their communities. This is a #HumanRight.” 📰 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/etUMENGM

It was a pleasure to lead a talk about neurodiversity in the workplace at Phaidon International, London. Building awareness about neurodiversity, empathetic mentoring and coaching, and how to implement long-term neuroinclusive business practices, is essential to create a workplace climate which recognises, supports and actively promotes the strengths, unique perspectives and well-being of neurodivergent employees. Embracing neurodiversity in the workplace goes beyond inclusive hiring; it involves fostering an environment where diverse ways of thinking and working are not just accepted, but celebrated. Recognising the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals is key to maximising their potential and boosting overall team performance. By harnessing neurodivergent strengths and providing necessary support, organisations can unlock a wealth of talent and innovation. Therefore, neuroinclusive practices such as offering reasonable adjustments, providing clear and consistent communication channels, and delivering tailored support programmes, can make a significant difference in the professional growth and well-being of neurodivergent employees. Furthermore, training managers and colleagues to be more empathetic and understanding towards neurodiversity can help create a more supportive and inclusive workplace for all.
At Phaidon International. 'You Matter' is one of our core values. Meaning that central to everything we do and every success we achieve, we endeavour to ensure that every person on our teams feels seen and supported. Following results from an office wide survey, our Employee Forum have arranged various activities over the year to spotlight life with Neurodiversity. Last week we were delighted to host Ashleigh Olivia Murray, an educator with a masters in Psychological studies who has experience supporting pupils with a range of SEND (including ASD, ADHD and SLCN), SEMH and Health Care Needs. Ashleigh led our group through various including the vastness of the neurodivergent community and how we as a business can support each other.
