🎥 Fragment from Oscar-winning documentary, "20 Days in Mariupol".
On February 24th, the first day of Russia's full scale invasion of #Ukraine
💥 Filmed right after the arrival of the first shells of 'liberation' in 2022.
But many forget Russia had already been shelling Mariupol since 2015.

I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
#Russia#Egypt#Ethiopia#SouthAfrica: I have no idea what these exchanges could mean going forward, especially regarding African participation.
However, I continue to keep a close watch on BRICS activity in the context of "film industry" (my focus), especially as more African countries join the intergovernmental organization.
Regarding African participation, the BRICS countries, which already included South Africa (the "S" in the acronym), added Egypt and Ethiopia to their ranks as of January 2024. And more African countries want to join.
But what does it all mean? 🤷🏾♂️
As I shared here last month, representatives from the BRICS nations convened to discuss joint film productions and developing national film distribution networks.
While no concrete plans were announced during the plenary, these are all noteworthy developments.
The BRICS Film Festival kicked off Friday, April 19, 2024, in Moscow, Russia, as part of the Moscow International Film Festival.
The festival is hosted annually by a different BRICS country and features films representing its member states.
Florence Masebe, a South African actor and festival jury member, said, "We get to exchange and know each other better and understand each other's preciousness and values better when we get to watch each other's stories."
Ethiopian producer Yirgashewa Teshome, also a festival jury member, added, "The BRICS Film Festival will make a difference for sure among the BRICS countries."
In the grand scheme for African BRIC countries, action in this context could mean pooling resources, widening access to foreign markets, pushing back against American and European entanglements, and inspiring regional cooperation, which could only bode well for the continued development of their local film industries, and spur economic growth.
It also could mean absolutely nothing at all!
Here's video coverage of the opening day press conference via Africa News.
Human beings have created more solutions than problems;
Some of these solutions are documented or communicated, but most are not;
Some are easily accessible, some may take time;
Some are free, others you will pay for it;
Some are locally sourced and some are borrowed;
It will take an innovative mind to look beyond;
For solutions that has been proven to work;
Watching every step, every routine, with deep attention;
To achieve a global goal, we must source for solutions globally;
It can either be transported or transmitted;
As long as we learn and implement, there is always a reason to smile;
Borderless solutions for local actors

#Maidaan is now the best-performing film, the *day-wise* numbers are much better than #BMCM and also the new titles [#DADP, #LSD2]… However, the overall total remains poor.
#Maidaan is collecting at *select* urban centres mainly, but the mass pockets remain dismal… The advantage is lack of prominent films in the coming weeks, which should help #Maidaan stay on crease for some time.

I had the pleasure of attending a roundtable discussion in Pula, Croatia, on Wednesday, July 17th, as part of the Pula Film Festival programme. It was an insightful session featuring esteemed colleagues from Croatian and Serbian collective management organizations, Darko Bajić and Hrvoje Hribar. Our discussion was skillfully moderated by Danilo Šerbedžija.
We delved into the current state of collective management in our region and explored the next steps to ensure future growth in Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. Additionally, we focused on strategies to support our colleagues in Bosnia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia to initiate collection efforts on behalf of AV creators.
One of the most exciting developments shared was the recent agreement signed in Kosovo between VAPIK (a collecting society) and cable operators. This marks a significant milestone for collective management in the region. The Kosovo agreement can also serve as a role model for neighboring states such as Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania, which remain grey zones on the map of Europe regarding the collective management of AV rights.
Moreover, collecting societies UFUS, AFA, DHFR, and AIPA also discussed future collaboration, which will soon be formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding. This MoU will be a cornerstone for cooperation in the coming years, particularly in IT and data management.
Collaborative efforts like these are crucial for advancing the rights and interests of AV creators across the region. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this agreement will have and to continuing our work in supporting collective management initiatives.

PRABHAS - ALLU ARJUN - NTR JR - RAM CHARAN - KAMAL HAASAN - SURIYA TO BAIL OUT BOLLYWOOD… This is a bitter pill to swallow for those who constantly indulge in North vs South debate.
While the #Hindi film industry faces an acute shortage of event films this year, the South industry is expected to bail out the #Hindi industry in the coming months… That’s a fact, like it or not.
#Prabhas [#Kalki2898AD], #AlluArjun [#Pushpa2], #NTRJr [#Devara] and #RamCharan [#GameChanger] - all arriving this year - are expected to storm the markets with their new films.
Additionally, #KamalHaasan and #Shankar are bringing the second instalment of the super-successful #Indian [#Hindustani] in June… Besides, there’s #Suriya arriving with the much-awaited #Kanguva in the second half of 2024.
The films in question will have an extensive release in North markets, thus providing the much-needed relief to the exhibition sector.

Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority - GEA has set up a new investment fund called the Big Time. This fund aims to make films better in quality and boost things like production, distribution, and filmmaking skills. The Ministry of Culture in Saudi Arabia is also helping with this fund, along with some specialized companies in filmmaking.The fund's value wasn't disclosed.
Turki Al Al-Sheikh, who runs the GEA, talked about this fund during a visit to Egypt. This fund will also include famous artists from the Arab world. They plan to use the fund to invest in important films from Saudi Arabia, the Gulf region, and other Arab countries. They want to help grow and support filmmaking in these areas.
Saudi Arabia has been working hard to bring attention to its film industry lately. They've made big announcements and set up funds to attract international partners. At the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, Saudi Arabia's Cultural Development Fund said they would spend $180 million on local films. This is to help the local film industry grow and to make Saudi Arabia more appealing to big Hollywood movie companies.
Last year, the Saudi Film Commission started an initiative called Daw to support local filmmakers. They offer money to Saudi production companies making films in the country.
