The news that Jamie Chadwick will take part in her first IndyCar test with Andretti Global in September is not only a major step for her own career, but for women in motorsport in general, and provides a crucial ingredient needed to increase female participation in the sport. First, let's look at the stats: 👉 10% female participation across all categories of competition 👉 13% female participation in karting 👉 7% female participation in formula and GT racing There are numerous reasons behind this lack of participation - gender stereotypes, cultural bias, cost, lack of facilities and, importantly, a lack of female role models. This last point is where Jamie Chadwick is changing the game. Visibility is fundamental to encouraging the next generation of drivers to engage with and pursue a career in the sport - if you can't see it, you can't be it. It is incredibly telling that, when surveyed last year, only 53% of motorsport fans knew that women can compete head-to-head with men in IndyCar - a stat that will inevitably change should Chadwick earn a full-time seat for 2025. Chadwick is of course not alone in helping to increase awareness of women competing in motorsport, but she continues to be the trailblazer for young female drivers aiming to reach the elite level, and her record-breaking career can have a profound impact on the next generation. 8 months ago on International Women's Day, I posted saying "I love being in meetings with Julia Pallé Cara Pelchen Sanjay Shivaram conjuring up ideas of what the future could hold. I truly believe inclusion isn’t ‘nice’ to have, it’s critical to our success, and I'm excited to be part of that future." Friday was a moment where those ideas and the passion and drive to make a difference came to fruition. Through the phenomenal work of Cara Pelchen Beth Paretta Imogine H. Libby Forbes and many more in the team, we made history. The first ever all women's test for a FIA World Championship took place in Madrid. This first-of-its-kind test provided elite women racing drivers the opportunity to drive the new-for-Season 11 Formula E GEN3 Evo race car, the same car the current drivers will use for the season ahead. It wasn't about setting the fastest lap (though the women exceeded expectations) for much of the field, it was the first time they had sampled any generation of Formula E car. With all the women on track at the same time, the session created a tangible platform for a wide pool of elite drivers who wouldn’t otherwise get an opportunity to drive machinery at this level. Despite motorsport being one of the few sports industries where men and women can compete together, the sport remains predominantly male, with only 3% of current top-tier racing licences worldwide held by women (FIA). This isn’t just about creating a one-off opportunity, it’s about analysing and actively dismantling the structural inequalities that have limited women’s participation and progress.
