Cisco's acquisition of Splunk was one of the biggest moves in enterprise tech in the last few years. This excellent conversation between Steven Dickens and Cory Minton at #SplunkConf gives a strategic look at the state of the integration of these companies. Here are a few takeaways: 1. Cisco and Splunk are collaborating in major products, including Cisco ThousandEyes, AppDynamics, and Splunk observability 2. Cisco leadership seems focused on increasing investment in R&D rather than cost-cutting (like other recent acquisitions...) 3. Data management is one of the biggest elements in observability, and the rise of OpenTelemetry (OTel) promises easier integration and consistent data collection across different tools 4. AI is being widely used in IT operations, particularly in enhancing productivity and decision-making, without necessarily reducing job numbers. I particularly like the concept of "assisted intelligence" - AI in support of people!

AI techniques have been the key to ensuring the correctness of the incredibly complex computing hardware on which our industries and societies depend for at least two decades. AI techniques are increasingly key to the correct and secure functioning of the software that's running most of the world around us. It's just not the AI techniques everyone is talking about these days … but rather methods and tools from automated reasoning, whose overall economic impact dwarfs anything achieved so far by generative AI. It's high time to realise that we need not just AI systems that are safe, robust and sustainable, but we need AI systems *in order to ensure that our critical infrastructure is safely, robust and sustainable* … the right kind of AI systems!

Well that was an interesting day. Also https://lnkd.in/et6JcAte suggests turning it off and on again. Again. Microsoft Azure page: “overall feedback is that reboots are an effective troubleshooting step at this stage.” I also liked (from Reddit via El Reg: "They sent us a patch but it required we boot into safe mode. We can't boot into safe mode because our BitLocker keys are stored inside of a service that we can't login to because our AD is down.” Ah. Gary Marcus notes that, well, you if thought having a software patch, uh, ‘outperform’ the biggest global #cyberattacks in accidental effectiveness, wait till you power it up with AGI… We’re all connected. But in the wrong sort of way. What we need is more #competition in the marketplace and less #consolidation. Just for resilience reasons.
