What is a megafire? Several "megafires" are burning in the western U.S. Megafire status generally applies to a fire over 100,000 acres or one that poses a significant threat to the environment or people. There are many factors that contribute to wildfire starts, size, and spread. In the 21st century, we are seeing bigger and more destructive wildfires more frequently. . Many dams in the U.S. are designed to help manage flooding and reduce the intensity of floods. About 75% of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ dams are designed for this purpose, one of which includes Chatfield Dam, located in Douglas, Colorado. Operating since 1975, Chatfield is the second of three “tri-lakes” dams built by USACE to collectively reduce risks from flooding in the Denver metropolitan area. When not operating to reduce flood impacts, USACE coordinates water releases from the tri-lakes system for recreation, water quality, and to support fish and wildlife. It’s important to remember that no dam is totally floodproof. Knowing where dams are is a good first step for understanding situations where flooding can happen. 🔥 #Wildfires have been developing within the Arctic Circle throughout June, with significant activity in Russia's Sakha Republic, a region that last faced widespread devastating fires in 2021. According to data from the #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), June wildfire carbon emissions for the Arctic are already the third highest for the month in the last two decades with large smoke plumes being transported across the region. Take a closer look at the data in our latest article 👉 https://lnkd.in/dfVXnvE2

For several years, I have officially announced many times that fires in the Arctic and Arctic Circles are completely natural as the most dangerous geographical location in the world. According to the new scientific theory of the natural suffocation cycle of the earth, which is based on the behavioral physics of aerosols of the third type, the Arctic has the highest density of these special particles and has the highest density of invisible atmospheric lenses in the world! There are simple and quick scientific solutions to destroy these dangerous lenses and prevent the formation of these invisible lenses to the aim of cooling and controlling the temperature of the earth. But until now, scientists of scientific research centers and managers of the global environment have not taken serious measures to learn and practice advanced atmospheric physics to solve disasters! Before the fires in Canada two years ago, I warned scientists, but no one paid attention! https://lnkd.in/efgNnjND Undoubtedly, the reason for their inattention was lack of familiarity with advanced atmospheric physics. Unfortunately, even now, they don't know that the safety valve of the Earth's temperature and also the key to solving this unsolvable mystery of the world (Climate changes and global warming) is in the Arctic atmosphere! https://lnkd.in/gy66dRT8 #NewScientificTheoryOfTheEarthNaturalSuffocationCycle #BehavioralPhysicsofNaturalColloidalParticles #climateresilience #DVK #airpollution #airquality #netzero #climatechange #CO2 #carbonemissions #StateOfClimate #Mark #Foed #wildfire #airquality #FBF2024 #geology #geologist #geologyrocks #geophysicist #energytransition #climatescience #earthobservation #earthscience #earthsciences #sciencecommunication #scienceeducation #meteorology #atmosphere #atmospheric #earthscience #earthobservation #physics #geophysics #science #dataanalytics #scienceexploration #politics #physics #aerosol #atmospher #airpollution #InternationalDayofCombatingSandandDustStorms #opendata #wildfires #globalwarming #showusthedata #geopoliticalrisk #ipccreport #politik #Copernicus #climatechangeadaptation #WHO #IPCC #UNClimateChange #NOAA #Cop10 #AirPollution #Air #AirReport #NASA #COP28 #IAEA #EPA #EPA #ipccreport #globalwarming #climatecrisis #COP26 #temperature #unavoidableopportunity #climateresilience #ActOnClimate #wildfires #data #oceans #globalwarming #technology #netzero #scenarios #ClimateAction #Fossilindustrie #Produktion #FDP #africa #water #drought #extremeweather #climatecrisis #foodcrisis #climate #climatescience #earthobservation #earthscience #geology #environmentalscience #sciencenews #scienceeducation #sciencecommunication #abpoli #cdnpoli #anthropocene

Such exciting work in wildfire science in Canada. Great to see applied science happening in real time! KT! Agency engagement, mentorship, curiosity, emerging leaders. All this happens when there are more voices at the table. People, relationships, trust, respect, sharing. Boundary spanners are important, there has been great work defining the role of boundary spanners in the West too. So excited to see where this work can go. What is next for the integrated fire management pathway?
This August, the Ontario fire management program led a field-based study on airtanker drop effectiveness in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada and Canadian Forest Service. We want to know how Ontario should use its aerial suppression resources to effectively and efficiently fight wildfires – now and into the future. We monitored airtanker drops on an active spreading wildfire in the boreal forest using airborne remote sensing and a team of specialised fire behaviour observers. The data collection campaign is designed to directly measure the impact of water drops from the CL-415 airtanker on critical fire behaviour attributes that matter to fire management agencies when making tactical decisions in the field – how effectively the suppression knocks down flames, prevents fire growth, and holds the fireline. 🔥 🌲 https://lnkd.in/gbcK6Kfb Jason Robinson Gabriela Ifimov Mark de Jong Mike Wotton
