Have you ever traveled back to a place and felt an overwhelming sense of nostalgia, peace, and confirmation that you are on the correct path?
I had that experience tonight when I was visiting my cousin who is currently pursuing her degree at Indiana Wesleyan University.
Reflecting on my time at IWU, there were moments filled with learning, growth, uncertainty, pain, strength, strategy, confidence connection, and joy. All of the different moments that made up that chapter in my journey, were crucial in laying the foundation for the work that God is calling me to do in my present moments.
As a student, I had to learn how to navigate in a world that was not designed to support my ability to thrive. I tenaciously used my God-given gifts, talents, and skills to create a pathway for myself to succeed while inspiring others to do the same. I learned how to think strategically, how to communicate effectively, and how to build relationships. Making policies and opportunities more accessible.
This evening I was reminded that I carry all of those memories with me as I help communities to accomplish similar initiatives to transform communities and experiences. On the surface, it may appear that my work only benefits people with disabilities.
The truth is we all benefit from thinking strategically, putting the needs of people before our own, and looking for opportunities to continuously improve through collaboration. As leaders we need to be good stewards of our own lives. within organizations, resources include several things—financial, human, natural, intellectual, and physical. The key is to work together. We must also understand how God has uniquely wired each of us.
The bottom line is with God’s help, a strong community, and a clear vision we can accomplish epic things.
