Talks about Machine Learning|Computational chemistry|Catalysis|Energy and Alternative Solutions using computation to solve chemistry problems
#!/𝐛𝐢𝐧/𝐩𝐡𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 "#!" (𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐠) tells a system to execute a bash script, this line declares I'm executing my PhD journey! The Good news is that this is not intended to scare or bore you - just look more closely to the end. Here's a glimpse into my new operating system, just read the first 3 lines and move to line 15: "#!/𝘣𝘪𝘯/𝘱𝘩𝘥 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘩𝘋 𝘮𝘰𝘥𝘦. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 /𝘥𝘦𝘷/𝘯𝘶𝘭𝘭" 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 1 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘔𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘰 /𝘮𝘯𝘵/𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩..." 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 1 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘱 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺, 𝘤𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴..." 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘦; 𝘥𝘰 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴..." 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨... 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨..." 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘰𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴... 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴, 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨..." 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩... 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘴..." 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴..." 𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘰 "𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘦..." 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 0.5 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 As you can see, I've mounted my brain to /mnt/research -line 4, set my coffee intake to infinite, and initiated the main research loop -line 6. One thing I forgot to include in the above bash is: " 𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐨 "𝐏𝐡𝐃.𝐞𝐱𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞: 𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 (𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐥𝐨𝐥𝐬! 𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞)" " Of course, the while true; do list doesn't capture all I will be doing in this PhD journey, which is normal as contingencies and things I deliberately skipped will always come up. The journey ahead promises to be challenging, enlightening, and filled with growth opportunities. I'm absolutely delighted to start my PhD in Chemical Engineering University of Alabama Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. My aim is twofold: to learn the art of scientific research and to make contributions to my focus area in computational methods and catalysis. This will enable me to tackle part of the questions I have raised and contribute to the vision I outlined in my Statement of Purpose: "One visionary question I had always asked myself is, can getting a catalyst or material for a particular process be as easy as searching the internet? One could easily say that this is another Artificial Intelligence big idea. I don't want to just think this; I want to be actively involved in research to make this a reality during my Ph.D." I'm always grateful for the support of my mentors, colleagues, and loved ones as I embark on this adventure.
Welcome our newest graduate student david emehelu!

Today we are starting "STARS EU Online Week"! 🚀 During 5 days from May 20 to 24, every day we will present different aspects of STARS EU Alliance activities, so that everyone can learn more about us. We start with a promotional video that premiered during the annual conference of our alliance, held on March 21-22 in Besançon, organized by Université de Franche-Comté. Below you will also find a summary with basic information about us: ⭐ What are our goals? We want to strengthen scientific cooperation to the benefit of students, scientists and our regions and countries. In a rapidly changing world, we want to face increasingly difficult challenges together. Thanks to the exchange of ideas and joint scientific projects, we combine our potentials for one goal: a better future for future generations. ⭐ What does it mean that we are a European University? As you can read on the European Commission website: "The European Universities initiative is an ambitious EU initiative aimed at establishing alliances among higher institutions from all across Europe, for the benefit of their students, staff and society. It is implemented primarily through Erasmus+ funding." More information here: https://lnkd.in/dMfpHqUY education/european-universities-initiative/about ⭐ Which universities are part of STARS EU? We bring together 9 universities from all over Europe (Netherlands, France, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Albania, Spain, Portugal, Czechia) and it can be said that we represent all fields of science. This creates enormous opportunities for development and cooperation for both scientists and students in achieving ambitious scientific goals. More information here: https://lnkd.in/dFSz4qaW ⭐ What are Thematic Interest Groups? TIGs are priority areas of our alliance around which specific scientific activities of all partners are focused. Various types of projects are carried out as part of TIGs. We will talk more about them this week, but here you have a glimpse: https://lnkd.in/e9cAQV6y Together, we want to reach for the stars. Transforming regions. Empowering people. With Hanze, University West, HSB Hochschule Bremen – City University of Applied Sciences, Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës, Cracow University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Universidad de La Laguna, Université de Franche-Comté

Besides that, it is interesting to hear these words from someone like Feynman, who was at the forefront of important, groundbreaking discoveries (and not by some people who are drowned in their egos and titles and probably not as prolific as him), questioning such titles and honors, that they might be superficial, it struck me that in the relatively recent history of human (compared to H. sapiens life), such honoring and titles in their current form are happening very very lately! Considering more than 2000 years of brilliant written history of science and philosophy, from Aristotle to Avecinna to Galileo to Newton, we have such titles only in our modern history! Are we commercializing everything, even in science? Or making up titles and awards day by day? And if yes, what is lacking (or, better say, fading away) inside us that we are compensating for by this? (It’s not innuendo; I am really seeking an answer!)
The pleasure is in finding things, its joy, and see folks are using it. Honours are nonesense. Richard Feynman is always inspiring and my hero.
