What if young people had the knowledge, tools, training, funding, and mentorship to become powerful advocates, spreading critical awarenesses and impacting policies in the fight against the Sexual Exploitation of Children (SEC)? At OneChild, we believe in this vision and are dedicated to making it a reality through our Youth Advisory Squad (YAS) program. Here’s what a youth you know could gain by joining YAS for the 2024-2025 cohort: -Learn from experts including survivor leaders, parents of victims, policymakers, law enforcement, and frontline workers and contribute to critical discussions on the sexual exploitation of children and other related youth issues. - Develop Public Speaking, Advocacy, and Leadership Skills with expert mentorship. - The opportunity to design and lead their own community project to raise awareness, advocate, or support survivors. -The chance to be meaningfully engaged in the design, implementation, and evaluation of OneChild’s programs, resources, events, and campaigns -Opportunities to influence corporate as well as provincial, national and multilateral policies and programs - Earn a $500 Scholarship upon completion of the program - Receive a Personalized Reference Letter to support applications for scholarships, awards, internships and job opportunities -Gain Certification of Involvement that recognizes their contributions to youth empowerment and civic duty. -Gain access to paid internships with OneChild and network with professionals in the field This upcoming cohort is especially exciting as we are expanding our call for YAS to include youth not just from Ontario, but also from our pilot provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia. This expansion offers a wonderful opportunity for youth across Canada to join and benefit from the program. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in spreading the word about this exciting opportunity as applications close TODAY! Hear firsthand from a recent YAS graduate, now a OneChild Summer Intern, about her transformative experience with YAS. If you’re interested in supporting the YAS program or learning more, please connect with us at info@onechild.ca. It’s Celebrating Diversity Week and worth reflecting just how many amazing organisations we have in Sussex who work with and support adults and young people who are neurodiverse They are empowering and supportive, celebrating the differences that neurodiverse individuals bring to a team, the many strengths that come within thinking a little differently. In my recent research on the LSIP project, I have heard about employers that are embracing the idea that diverse teams that can solve problems in different ways and actively promote these opportunities within their organisations. I’ve met with those that work with neurodiverse business founders (who statistically are four times more likely than national average to be either dyslexic or have ADHD) Most importantly, I see a sense of togetherness and pride within the neurodiverse community, recognising that actually so much that gets done, problems that get solved and insights made to change the world, have been thanks to those with neurodiverse minds. There has been a growth in support for neurodiverse individuals, but more still needs to be done, with only 22% of autistic people currently employment. As part of the Sussex Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), we aim to be shine a light on the amazing projects that do this work and have been mapping provision across Sussex. 📢 We Need Your Insight! If you are you involved in supporting neurodiverse individuals or those with learning challenges, helping them find their path into the workforce in Sussex there is still time to participate in our short survey so that we can highlight the work of your organisation as we aim to map out the support landscape and identify how we can better serve our community. We invite responses from all organisations who would like their work to be included in our mapping, whether third sector, business, support agency, training provider, Uni or college, Your input will contribute to a comprehensive report highlighting the incredible work being done across Sussex to support neurodiverse individuals and those with learning difficulties or disabilities. This is an opportunity to showcase your efforts and be recognised as examples of good practice. Our community is enriched by diversity, and there is so much to celebrate across Sussex! Please link here to complete the short survey (no more than 5 mins!) https://lnkd.in/eJNw2dRi 📆 Deadline: Friday, 29th March Please do get in touch if you would like to talk to us directly about your project or find out more about the wider LSIP project. #InclusiveSussex #NeurodiversityInWork #SussexEmployment #PathwaysToWork #DiversityAndInclusion Alice Reeves Genius Within CIC Think Differently Joyfully Different Differing Minds Mariam Crichton Robbie W. The last two class sessions for my externship students (experiential learning course that accompanies work performed in real offices) are five minute presentations on an issue they took on in their work this semester. Why 5? Your boss doesn’t usually ask you to explain your work or a case to them in a 45 minute speech with a prepared PowerPoint presentation. Usually you’re lucky if you get any sort of visual tool and you’ve got to synthesize something complex into just minutes. So we practice. The students in my course are in all different kinds of placements. My students are so cool: • Taylor taught us all about the Negusie case and duress exceptions in immigration and asylum. • Matias walked us through in-space satellite servicing assembly and why the Federal Communications Commission is involved. • Dave detailed the “states largest law firm… outside of Omaha,” and consumer rights in the Attorney General’s office. • Josh explained how pro se complaints often struggle and how the court approaches them. • Petr outlined sentencing guidelines in Federal Court, where we learned it uses a relatively exacting formula. • Ashley taught us about Stark Law, False Claims Act, and Anti-Kickback Statutes in medical practice. • Alex explained how habeas corpus petitions end up at the Attorney General’s Criminal Division and how they approach them. • Morgan contrasted Iowa and Nebraska Worker’s Compensation and we learned about “scheduled members,” (keep your hands and feet inside the ride, folks). • Justin walked us through a Social Security appeal and the largest government program in the country! • Shaianne detailed how courts look at motions of attorney’s fees, how they’re justified and judged, and the work she did using the “result obtained” factor. • Keegan posed the question, “is outer space a global commons?” and helped us understand why that matters. • Kat explained how the U.S. Attorney’s Office finds and prosecutes individuals engaged in child sexual exploitation and abuse. • William outlined the history of the juvenile justice system, explained how the developing adolescent brain impacts behavior, and considered how detention may be particularly harmful to youth. These are just my favorite days - we get to learn about legal practice in so many different contexts! I’m so thankful for our legal community.
