eConsults As is all too clear, our Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine just cannot see all the referrals for care we receive in a timely way. While we approach this challenge with a range of solutions, one of the many ways that is already working well is e-Consults. This approach is really simple in concept: a primary care or specialty physician sends a written consult to one of us to review. Within 48 hours, we read the consult, review the chart, and respond to the request. The response can include straight-forward actionable guidance to start, increase, or change medications. It may also result in a request to send the patient directly to us for a full evaluation. As you might expect, the vast majority of eConsults results in clear guidance back to our colleagues helping them make a rapid intervention without having to wait to see us in person. Psychiatry has responded to over 600 eConsults so far, and the number each month continues to grow as the process and opportunity becomes more well-known around our system. We continue to seek and implement strategies to meet our patients’ needs. It is great to find a simple approach that works so well!
