The theme for this year's SCN8A Awareness Day, "If You Only Knew," is a powerful message designed to evoke empathy, understanding, and a deeper awareness of the challenges and experiences faced by SCN8A individuals and families, like our own team member Bonnie's daughter. The theme highlights the often invisible and misunderstood aspects of living with SCN8A. It serves as a call to educate oneself about the symptoms, treatment options, and ongoing research related to SCN8A and it underscores the importance of community support, solidarity, and the power of collective voices in making a meaningful difference in the lives of affected families. Finally, "If You Only Knew" aims to inspire change – in attitudes, policies, and research priorities – to improve the lives of those living with SCN8A. Dedicated professional with a proven track record of fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
Looking at DFV resources and the glaring gap between tools for victim-survivors far, and the few-and-far-between resources that directly address (and reduce the liklihood of) offenders. In fact, we maintain a near perfect ignorance of tools, resources or grants to educate and create change in the individuals most likely to impact on the ever increasing number of DFV incidents in Australia and beyond. I’m looking to my community to get a project off the ground soon to discuss, create and socialise a toolkit that directly addresses those offenders who use violence. The purpose of the toolkit will to: - identify UGR’s that normalise violence in Australia - find ways for boys and young men to build skills and social connections to avoid and/or reduce the use of violence - reduce opportunities for perpertrators to excuse DFV behaviours My hope is to create real world tools to reduce the number of (primarily) men willing to engage in these behaviours by changing UGR’s and creating mindset and tolerance changes across their and our communities.

Check out this article from American Psychological Association Division 18's journal, Psychological Services: Organizational caring as a predictor of good mental health in an operational naval environment. Military service members encounter numerous stressors that adversely affect their mental health. These pervasive stressors emphasize the need to continually surveil, identify, and mitigate negative factors before they can produce cascading consequences for the individual. The present study utilized a large sample (N = 13,666) to identify several factors that might lead individuals to have poor mental health days in an austere naval operating environment. One quarter of respondents (N = 3,484; 25.49%) indicated that they had 0 poor mental health days in the preceding month, whereas one in eight (N = 1,868; 13.57%) indicated experiencing poor mental health every day in the preceding month. This bimodal distribution allowed for binary logistic regression to determine the relative influence of various factors in identifying individuals who reported significant mental health concerns versus those who did not. Split-half analyses also permitted replication of the data through randomized sampling and dividing data by ship class. Gender emerged as the most prominent predictor of mental health quality with females reporting poorer mental health. Meanwhile, organizational caring (a service member’s belief that higher organizational levels cared about them) emerged as a protective factor. Perceptions of caring among the organizational hierarchy depended upon organizational tier; that is, a connection to the larger organization functioned as an even more robust predictor than perceptions that their local and more salient organizational structure (e.g., direct supervisor) cared about them. Taken together, this evidence helps identify factors related to mental health issues that may negatively impact military personnel on active duty. https://lnkd.in/gZxtAsqQ It is my social obligation to society, to my people, to continue to use my media platform and my voice to normalize the conversation on GBV. Too many innocent lives are lost to this evil. Many simply don't know what to do and where to go to get help. our society constantly victim shames and blames women for speaking out AND men who fall victim. Just stop it. There is massive funding coming from donor partners but only a trickle will reach civil society, NGOs and churches. Our police are inadequately resourced, the public healthcare system is broken, we lack specialist counselors for children and we simply don't have safe houses for men who are also victims of violence. We want justice? Boost funding and support for prosecution. Keep politics out of it. All frontline responders of GBV (enforcement, medical, media, human rights defenders etc) MUST have a support network and services in place such as counselors to alleviate the transfer of trauma from the workspace to the home. Imagine if you spent 8 hours a day plus handling GBV cases in the FSVU or stitching up faces and setting broken bones in Emergency Care? Ending violence in our country is everyone's business. Wake up PNG, we are constantly making global headlines for all the wrong reasons. 🇵🇬 💪🏼 #wonderwomandiaries❤️
