Which student start-up team is the best of the best? It’s almost game time for two entrepreneurial student teams from TU Delft: they will represent our university in the Dutch 4TU Startups Impact Challenge contest on October 12th 🏆 sanSpore and Geotherm Electric’s innovative business ideas are all about solving societal issues: SanSpore with sensor technology to detect fungi spores in greenhouses and Geotherm Electric with an application to turn waste heat from industrial plants into electricity 👏 They will compete with six student start-ups from the three other technical universities: Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, University of Twente and Wageningen University & Research. Absolutely honored that the United Nations endorsed the UNCW CIE Ocean Innovation Conference on September 19 as an Ocean Decade event. When we came up with this idea of sparking #bluetech problem solving for ocean and waterway solutions, I had hoped for 150 attendees and 10 Innovation Fair booths. The response from entrepreneurs, investors, local government, high schools, and citizens has been incredible! 260 are already registered (still increasing with 3 days to go) and the 20 spots of the Innovation Fair are sold out! Launched in January 2021, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the ‘Ocean Decade’, provides a convening framework across the world to engage and collaborate to trigger a revolution in ocean science. Through collaboration, more robust science-informed policies will be developed at global, regional, national and even local levels. The goal of the UN Ocean Decade community is contributing to a well functioning, productive, resilient, sustainable, and inspiring ocean. Loving the water is in our DNA. Just a couple of months ago, a Yale School of Management and Yale School of the Environment joint degree student gave me the perfect answer when I asked her who would be the ideal person to speak on campus about supporting and accelerating climate tech innovation. Without hesitation, she said "Dawn Lippert at Elemental Excelerator". And I was happy to respond that she should immediately go register for the Yale University Innovation Summit to hear Dawn speak. Under Dawn's leadership, Elemental Excelerator has invested in over 150 startups across industries like energy, water, mobility, industry, agriculture, and nature-based solutions. These companies have raised over $8 billion in follow-on funding, driving innovation and equitable climate solutions. It's a model that prioritizes social equity, with many portfolio companies serving low- and moderate-income communities. As an alumna of Yale University and the Yale School of the Environment, Dawn left a lasting imprint on this place. She's cited by faculty and the administration as the dot on the horizon for current students to aim for, and for good reason. She's a human magnet for good ideas and people, who leads and motivates networks of organizations, and is also deeply invested in teaching and sharing everything that she learns along the way. Today, we unveil the Venture Science Doctorate’s Mini Documentary. In health, climate, agriculture and computation, today’s challenges require speed, scale and skills like never before. PhD programs shape the deep tech workforce that solves humanity’s problems, but they’re not optimised for these challenges; they don’t attract driven, commercially-minded visionaries or under-represented groups. Featuring Dr Claire Thorne, Dr. Thane Campbell, Brett Cornick and directed by Bruno Chiecco, we wanted to offer an insight into why the Venture Science Doctorate is the alternative. Our mission? To have trained 1,000 science entrepreneurs per year, within ten years. Join a 3-year, fully-funded, sector-agnostic PhD program, running our proven innovation model.
